So I headed out ready to kill a deer. I didn't have that feeling I have all season either. You know the one where you just know you are going to see deer. I just felt like I wasn't going to see anything but, wanted to be out there anyways. Just before day break I heard an owl hoot near me and then one on the other side of the corn field. Then a screech from each one or that's what I thought. This went on back and forth till day break and then I spotted the one closest to me. He was in a tree about 35yd from me. It was actually two. I am assuming they must be mating. Once day light had struck the calls back and forth became more frequent an more aggressive sounding. It then hit me they seemed to be challenging one another. The one closest to me stayed put and the other couple moved closer with every set of calls. Hoot then screech each time. I am assuming the one moving closer was the aggressor due to what happened next. The couple flew at the couple close to me and the one close to me took off straight at them. Only the ones that were hooting collided in mid air and fell about 10-15 feet locked and fighting. Then broke loose and the ones that stayed close to me chased the other two off and ended up back in the same area a while later. All this took place over about a 30 minute time frame. I have never witnessed anything like that from owls. It was awesome to be able to watch.
I've had owls and hawks fly and land very close checking me out in my camo, but I've never seen anything like you describe. Sounds like a neat experience.
It was. Apparently the owls around here are something else. I was out scouting this past spring and had one following me. He started out by swooping in from up in the high trees. He landed about 8' up in a tree that was just in front of me. He then watched me walk when I got 10yd or so past, he would fly about 10yd ahead. The closest I got to him was about 6' from the tree with him being right at 8'. So I started talking to him and he seamed like he was listening. That was also a pretty cool experience.
An owl almost killed me....I was in my stand an hour before light enjoying the quiet and kinda dozing a little from the 3 hours I slept the night before...right before first light one let out a screech about 10 yards from me....I jumped 30 feet in the air and about fell out....they will def make the hair on ure neck stand up....errrrriiiieeee Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Some of the better moments of hunting is getting to witness such acts that otherwise we would probably not be privvy to.
