So I'm sure you all noticed I haven't been around much. Still having a hard time figuring out how you have gone this long without me. Anyway, it is because I started a new job...one I am having a hard time liking but I was in need and not in a position to turn a job down. I'm currently hauling water for the gas drilling work going on here in NE PA. The good: Pay is sick! Super hard to beat. Also, my schedule is pretty good, 5 nights on, 2 off, 5 on, 3 off then repeat. In the oilfield, its hard to get days off sometimes, so I'm def happy about that. Less traffic at night. Bosses are home in bed, so less crap from them. Oh, and the benefits are very good also...once they kick in of course lol. The bad: It's night shift! I'm having a hard time with that. Not so much staying up. More of the driving part. Wouldn't be bad if it was highway, or nice flat straight roads. But its far from that. In this area, the roads are fairly narrow, very hilly, and so many curves and turns you'll swear the people making them were following large snakes with a lawn mower and decided the new path would make a great new road. Plus, they are all like 40-55 mph, so its not easy to just go slow and steady. Now, all that isn't so bad, but then you throw in the tired factor, the fact that you are in a rather large, 73,000lb water tank, head lights from on coming traffic, and the general public who is not so supportive of the oilfield here, so they cut you off, tailgate you, keep their high beams on for the fun of it, and an industry that is all push push push till you wreck. Oh, and also hate working a different shift as my girlfriend! Anyway, was wondering how many others worked night shift? Do you like it or hate it? Any night truckers with some night driving tips? I can't be the only one.
Night shifts suck, I get stuck with one every Saturday, my only tip is drink caffeine anythin hahahha
I used to work third when I worked for GM. Definitely took some getting used to. I'll never do it again if I have my way!
cmonsta, I wish you the best man. I don't work the night shift but I do work until 2am. I don't usually get to sleep until 4am then have to be back up at 8am to get my kids ready for school. So I feel your pain on being tired my friend. Here is one suggestion. Try improving your diet (not saying you don't have a good one now) and don't use any caffeine products until you get to work.
You know the saying...........NY state will spend 10 million to move the obstacle. PA will spend 10 million to go around the obstacle.
Haha yeah thats been the plan so far. Has been working for sure. Yeah I would have turned it down if I wasnt in need. Cant wait to get off it and its only been a week lol I do need to work on my diet. I have horrible eating habits for sure! haha yeah I see that now! Drives me nuts!
I also want to add to my cry baby ranting, we work 12+ hour shifts. So 60+ hours a week. Great for the money. Not great for the tired issue or the lack of seeing my girlfriend/personal life issue. 12+ hour shifts are rough over night! I worked 14-16 hour shifts at my last job, and didnt mind it at all because it was day shift and not much trucking.
I worked the 2am to 2pm shift at a fiberglass plant once. It has to be by far the worst job i ever had. The hours werent that bad but the itch was horrible.. not to mention when i got off work at 2pm, my gf went to work at 2:30pm - 11pm and at the time our daughter was about 6 months so that was another 9 hour shift. i was getting about 2 hrs a sleep a day for about 8 months before i found another job.
Hey, Get me a job! haha My buddy is a well tender for SWN out there. Makes great money but works longgggggg hours.
I'm currently working night shift I have been with the company going on 8 years and now I'm on night shift not by choice. I have doing this over a year now. I work 12 30 hours a day only three days but til this day I struggle with sleeping and its going to be one of those things where I dont think I will ever get use to sleeping thats one of my downfall and the other down fall is not being able to see my wife and kids for 3 days. The best advice I can say is that if you don't like night shift keep looking you just might get lucky and find a job that you enjoy or continue to do the same thing only on days.
I'm a firefighter and I work rotating day and night shifts. 3 days on (7am-5pm), then 3 days off; then 3 nights on(5pm-7am), 3 days off. We're allowed to "sleep" on night shifts, but it's not really sleep. Defiantely rest, I'll give it that. But the anxiety of going from 0-60 in seconds prevents any kind of real sleep...but that's also what makes it fun.
I've been working the night shift for years and the best thing that works for me is split sleep. 8am-2pm and 8pm-10pm. Hours are 23:00-07:15
Not getting much better and missing my bowhunting.com peeps! But gotta keep pushing. I am finding the sleep is not to much of an issue, although its not easy. But the night driving still is hard to adjust to...especially since it seems to really like to be foggy here. Fog makes me very tired! And its hard to drive in.
Wanna come out here n make killer money I can def help. The pay is nuts around these parts. But, dont expect much of a life lol
I work 24's... I try and sleep at night though...but most of the time im up and in the squad. Caffiene brother...lots of it. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Yes I been getting plenty of that for sure! Its not cheap lol...really eats up the extra pay you get for working night lol
Yeah I have to work 12 hour nights for part of the year. I end up going back and forth every two weeks on nights and absolutely hate it. But then again, I hate this job so that may be a big factor in it as well.
