So, we hear all these slang names tossed around for big deer, (slob, tank, brute, toad, hammer (****ie tunes), etc.). Where do they come from and do you ever get tired of hearing them? I understand names like monster, giant… but what about all the others? What are your thoughts?

I just like to mix it up a little bit, I generally use them in congrats posts. Although when certain deer get posted, usually go with the first adjective that comes to mind.

Think I called Blade(Fitz's buck) a tank when he was in velvet, his muscle tone and overall body size was impressive.

Yep, I think I use tank the most… it seems the most descriptive to me.

I would only name one if I have a record with a certain deer. Otherwise I just call them whatever comes to mind first whether it be about size of the body or unique or huge rack.

I generally have a first impression of a deer when I see it and have something fitting pop in my head based on that. My #1 buck this year...the first time I saw him in person I sat i nthe truck in disbelief saying "Oh my gosh" over and over as I'm sure my face was even blushed a bit so from then on I knew if I got him on camera I'd call him OMG!

As far as general descriptions on other folks deer, like everyone else I use stud, hoss, tank, pig, etc...whatever works to get the thought across.

Slob was always the one that got me... Never understood it. Someone told me it actually stood for "super large ornery buck".

I use tank quite often whn referring to mature bucks.

I agree, it almost seems disrespectful. I mean elk can be royals and monarchs and a giant whitetail is a slob? Never really got that one.

Usually I'll say toad (no idea what that even means) or stud. I suppose the later is more appropriate?

The one that always gets me is cranker. What exactly is it cranking? Or gagger, pig, etc.. I understand why some people name their "hit list" but the action of naming any and all deer gets extremely redundant.

I hear many names for deer. I guess it all depends on what youve heard growing up in the whitetail woods and what you like using or comes to mind first i wouldnt say theres bad ones but sometimes guys say some stupid ones i think there just so excited to see a big deer just anything pops outta there mouth . I think ive done it in my younger years lol but i usually say its a giant or a booner but if were talking names of hit listers or bucks weve had history with thats when some crazy names come out. Like a deer named T bag does anyone know what that means lol did they catch that deer t baging another deer or what i mean thats a crazy one ive heard so many crazy names we try to keep it simple and go by the looks and how he acts or grows to name them like i shot a 16 point last year 6 year old he just wasnt growing no mass or size just kept putting on points but small ones. I said to myself by the time i shoot him he'll have 40 points so we named him shorty forty then the next year i shot him lol i gues its just what comes to mind and what you wanna say.

Personally, I'm not much for naming bucks. When I do name them they are bucks I've gotten on my cams. The names I give them are usually just a descriptive term...... the wide 10, the long beam 8 or the notch ear buck. I never got in to naming bucks with fancy names.

"swamp donkey" has always made me scratch my head a bit!! I hunt a swamp, and have never seen a "donkey" near the swamp..nor do I see the correlation between a buck and a donkey

For us, it started with Freak Daddy. He was the biggest, nastiest deer that may have ever lived on our area. The definition of dominant.

I should have specified, I'm talking about slang names for big bucks, not necessarily the given "name" of the deer. I still love that buck Caleb!

My big deer are called "buttescotch".
My girls would name the bucks I had on camera when they were little. Well they would only recognize antler vs. no antler and they thought it was funny to name my big target buck "butterscotch". So since then my brother and I have just called our big bucks butterscotch.
You should see the look of confusion on people's faces when we start talking about big bucks!

Stud is all I use. Best describes myself, therefore it's fitting for a fine specimen to be described as such:D :D :D

I'm not sure... .it's kind of a pet peeve of mind, and yet even I use them often. Slob and Gagger are my least favorite.

I usually say what a stud or hoss. Reasoning similar to MGH lmao.
