Stumbled across this artifact today putting out a camera. Looks like an axe. Be interested to hear what you guys have to say about it

Very nice find. I have been finding a lot of broken arrow heads and scrapers. Looks like an axe to me.

Very cool. My dad has found a few, and one very similar to the one you have. It appears to be in mint condition too which is pretty unuasual. Good find.

If A guy at work hadnt retired he would tell you what time period and style, all I can say is that it is a very nice find and it is a full groove axe! Nice!!!

Seems to me it's the wrong type of stone for a sharp axe. Maybe more of a club or hammer. Either way pretty cool :tu:

I have a book that covers all types of weapons from prehistory to modern times. I'll see if something similar is listed in there!

Nice find I found one like that when I was a kid and know it's in the local museum.

Looks to me like an early grinder (think mortar and pedestal) they used them to grind corn etc. I have a couple hide scrapers and axe heads and I agree that doesn't seem to be a type of stone usually used for edged weapons. But hey... I'm wrong alot according to my wife

    Very sweet find either way!!

Yep, club or hammer.. not a axe for sure.

Can you show a picture of the width and with something else to show size comparison?

Where did you actually find this thing? Just sitting on the ground? Was this at the top of a hill? Side? Bottom? Near a creek or river?

Its rather interesting how smooth it looks. I'd be inclined to think of two possibilities.
One, it's extremely old and over time has weathered to be very smooth. Two, Its a modern reproduction that somehow made its way into the woods.

Exact location of where it was found and the type of rock (something a rock expert / geoloist would have to determine) would make one of those explanations more likely than the other.

If it is a genuine artifact that's awesome and I'd keep looking around that area, there's likely more.
