So what ya think? You all liking It so far? What do you plan on doing different for hunting compared to hunting with your compounds? I wanna hear what you all think of It so far.
I suck so far, LOL. I'm pretty dead nutz from 15 in, but you put me at that 20 mark and I fall to pieces. Just trying to get a consistent routine, seems like everytime I pull back I do something different. In all Honesty I'm more accurate when I snap shoot. I'm pretty sure that's a bad thing, but I know very little about this game.
I am hooked on shooting my bow, the whole idea of being simple is something I am really enjoying and I love hunting off the ground. But hands down I have never owned a bow that I wanted to shoot more, I want to shoot daily and now that I have the snow subsiding I can get outside and do so. I look forward to my first kill.
I like how much more relaxing it is when I practice. I generally shoot the compound first and then the longbow. Its like, Ok work time is over lets have some fun now! And I don't really look at compound shooting as work. Its something I really enjoy, its just a whole different mindset when the longbow is in my hand. Like it belongs there more than the compound does. And BTW what is considered new? I've been shooting trad for a couple of years now. I still consider that new. As far as hunting goes I'll be spending more time on the ground. These days when I'm out scouting and looking for stand locations I'm not just looking up! I'm looking for deadfalls and things on the ground to make natural blinds out of.
Well, I've killed deer with a recurve and with a longbow. I think my next goal is gonna be building a selfbow and killing a deer with that. Then maybe knapping, etc... At this point I don't plan to hunt full time with trad gear, but I do love playing around with it. I'm gonna start on a selfbow this weekend. Just practicing on how to rough one out, etc. I'm gonna use a green sapling and then cut a few more to put up and let dry. I may even cut a few cane shafts to put away and dry.
You had to go and do this to me Steve. Just when I was getting really addicted to the compound. Now, I can't put the recurve down. I had to get another tackle box yesterday just for my trad gear. By the time I get my bow rigged up and a spare string and a quiver to hunt with, I'll have mucho $$$$ tied up in this baby. Oh well, I guess there are worse addictions. Bobby
No doubt there Bobby!! I'm happy for ya bud, looking forward to some great conversation's and story telling with ya!!
I just love hearing the excitement of the newbies. What y'all need to be ready for is it only get worse. I've been into this for 45+- years and I still get the same feelings for it as I ever did. I just received a dozen antique La Fond Lighting Four broadheads from a guy on TradGang. I can't wait to put them on a set of cedar and a set of Gold Tips to see how they fly. Naturally I'll want to get them set up for my turkey bow first. Just another good reason to get out and shoot.
It was all my dad's fault. He bought me my first bow when I was just a tadpole. His favorite TV show was "The American Sportsman with Kurt Goudy". As y'all might know Fred Bear was on that show quite a bit.
I am having a blast with it Steve. I find myself shooting more w/ the recurve than the compound right now. Being able to just look at a dot and then when it is all said and done the arrow is in the dot...... now thats fun. I am working like heck to get ready for the birds come April 6 but I dont know yet, we will see. I do want to tell you guys on here that I do appreciate the help yall have given me so far.
VA.. Gotta agree, I love reading the excitement the guys have here. When I was growing up there was a definite dislike for bowhunting from the gun hunters. There just wasn't a confidence that a bow and arrow were effective for taking animals as large as a white-tail deer. I still remember when seeing a deer TRACK caused a big commotion among people around here, there weren't any deer at all. Still.. there were a couple young fella's up the holler that spent a lot of time going hunting with my Father. I vividly remember their recurve bows, back quivers and especially the brightly colored feathers. Apparently it stuck in the back of my mind because later it brought me back. At the time I came into bowhunting there was maybe 6 archery tags sold in the county each season. There wasn't people available to help you learn and there wasn't the material to read like there is now. Don't laugh guys... but being left handed no one was there to tell me there was a difference in a left handed and right handed bow.. I just couldn't understand how in the *##* anyone could hit anything with a bow.. Of course, eventually I figured out shooting a right handed bow- left handed just won't work. I remember seeing Allen's first compound, ugly, ugly, ugly.. No doubt about it.. Curt Gowdy and Fred Bear sitting around the campfire talking about bowhunting drew a lot of people to bowhunting. woodsman
Nice stories woodsman and Rob . I only hope one day they legalise hunting with a bow in the UK , you'd all be invited . In the meantime i know i'm gonna love my Longbow and cannot wait to practice in a build up for hunting with her in Illinois 2011 for whitetail or maybe Texas hog .
