I got my first bow about a month ago with the intention of hunting with it So far I have no problem hitting a 20oz water bottle at 70ft, I've popped a few smaller Cans as well. Which has me wondering about shots on deer and bear... Is it practice to try and pull head shots off on deer or bear? I would think the razor hunting tips wouldn't work but these field tips I use Have proven to do damage. Is something like that possible on deer or bear or would that be like shooting At a rock? Thanks
Stick to the vitals for several reasons. But just for thought look at the size of the head compared to the vitals. The vitals will offer a larger shot. Why shoot at a 12oz can when you can shoot at a gallon jug and get the same result? Easier shot especially when your adrenaline is pumping. Also head shots are not a good PR for our sport. That really gets the tree huggers going.
I shoot at the small can to gain precision with my shooting. I like To think if I can hit a small can I should have no problem. Hitting the Vitals. After watching some kill shots on YouTube is the first time The head shot question came up. I watched little things like the sound of the strings when fired spook The game enough so the vital shot was missed and the deer had To be tracked... I saw a couple drop on the spot shots but was curious About head shots and if any one takes them on deer or bear. I would think a head shot would drop a deer or bear. Im genuinely Interested in my game having a quick death... No running, no tracking just Dropped on the spot
If what you want is dropped on the spot you should look into buying a rifle. Start watching some episodes of Bow Hunt or Die, the most humane and quick kills are in the vitals. But very few animals shot with a bow drop in place. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
When it comes to bowhunting having an animal drop on the spot is VERY rare and head shots are NEVER encouraged. If you are truly interested in providing the quickest and most humane death then a shot to the vitals (lungs & heart) is the best bet every time. It is the largest target area that will provide a quick kill and easy recovery. There are entirely too many things that can go wrong with a head shot to make it a viable option. My best advice for you would to be find a local hunter's education or bowhunter's education course to attend. You may not legally need to do this in order to purchase a license where you live however the information you will learn in those few hours will be invaluable to your bowhunting success.
In 22+ years of hunting I have not seen many head shots. I shot a small buck in the top of the head with a 243 at about 80 yards when I was 13 and never found anything but bone chip and hair. I was young and didnt really understand with the distance and angle this shot was nearly impossible with this caliber rifle. Now I have seen alot of rifle guys shoot them in the neck and drop them but not bow hunters.
Not to mention that shooting an animal in the head can expose brain material and could contaminate meat. Especially with CWD and other brain diseases occurring in widespread areas all over the country. Stick with the vitals.
