Hello All I am new to the bow hunting world and am very interested in diving in and making it my primary ways of hunting. I currently rifle hunt as I am a former Marine and well that was my bread and butter for the past 5 years. As you can see from my name I am located in Northern Virginia. I am looking for a good Compound Bow to start nothing over $600.00. Any suggestions are more than welcome please advise.
for under $600 id say a hoyt turbo hawk they are 550 with a $50 mail in rebate and they are a nice shooting bow for the price ....i cant belive i braged on a hoyt lol
I was watching a video on those on youtube they shot through both sides of a steel drum i was very impressed
There are a lot of great bows. This time of year there should be a good choice of used bows at an archery shop close to you. First thing I would do is go in to a shop get an idea of what you like and what fits you and go from there. The worst thing you can do is get a bow that doesn,t fit you. Thank you for your service to this great country! God Bless and good luck finding the right bow for you!
He, welcome... I'm in Stafford, work at Quantico, still doing the Marine thing and will be for some time. Where are you hunting? Check on Quanticoyardsales.com there are some used bows on there right now, good starting point at least. Welcome aboard, have to get up with VAShadow (Brett) and VAbowbender and I some time. I have hunted with Brett and intend to a lot more this year.
I have a few friends who have some land around here in Massaponax, Heartwood, Stafford and Falquier Co. Ive hunted CF Felps before they closed it to general firearms. This year I got a job with GEICO and one of my coworkers owns land down in bowling green va. Ive noticed here in VA you are 10x more likely to get a land owners permission to hunt their land if you bow hunt so hence the main reason for the switch.

Deadstroke, welcome to Northern Virginia! I have to say that the selection of local archery shops around NOVA is somewhat limited compared to other places I've lived, but my best advice is to go find a multi-brand shop and shoot 4-5 bows until you find one that feels right. You will get LOTS of advice from folks that Brand X is the best bow in the world, but the truth is, any major manufacturer today makes a fantastic bow and the most important thing is to find the one with the right combination of features to fit you. Personally, I'd invest an evening in driving to one of the closest Bass Pro Shops and shooting from their selection... around here, they probably have the widest selection to choose from. Gander Mountain is pretty close, but I found the bow techs at BPS to be a bit more knowledgeable. Good luck!
You can get more bang for your buck by picking up a good used bow, often fully loaded and ready to shoot. I would check out AT classifieds. As Florida Marine said, you have some really good people near you. Getting some guidance on brands/models, set up and tuning should be easy enough. Good luck!
Thanks for the welcome to the area although i was stationed here at Marine Corps Base Quantico VA from 05 to 09 so I am very familiar to the area. Everyone has now gotten all safety happy about using general firearms and they shut down my fav public grounds to bow only now. As for the BPS I live about an hour south of one and every time I go there I get in trouble with my wife :D.I am a hardcore bass fishermen durring the spring and summer. I came from California land of the big bass and that is all i used to do there but we could do that year round. I think im gonna seriously have to do both. I think ill head to Gander Mtn as its only one exit down from me first one day this week. Thanks for all the help everyone all knowledge is very helpful.
ok so trip planned to BPS on Sunday is there anything in particular that I should be asking the pros there or just go in say I'm planning on buying a bow come tax time but I like to do my research please help me fit a bow to my build/wallet
It's not really something you can judge and decide on before you go test it out. It's almost like getting a car, your going to want to test drive it to see how it feels. Start looking at some sweet looking bows on the BPS website, write some names down, look at reviews, poundage, all that junk. Then when you go in, you can say "hey i'm looking for a bow, I was wondering if you have any of the following selections, blah blah blah". If they do, they will let you shoot it, and if they don't, they should present you similar selections. Whatever you do though, do NOT dry fire the bow. Most shops that i've been to, will make you pay for the bow, even if it doesn't ruin it. I hope this helps, and goodluck.
I dont beleive in dry firing anything. I have quite the collection of firearms and have snap caps for each caliber but thanks for the heads up on the paying for it.
