Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to hunting in general, and extremely new to bowhunting. My sister and I have recently decided to give this sport a try (my boyfriend is ecstatic lol) so I figured (in my typical nerdy fashion) I'd find a forums, read some books/manuals, watch some videos, drill my boyfriend constantly etc to get a better understanding of this sport before I actually try my hand at it. He's taking my sister and I to Gander Mountain this week to help us pick out bows (he's getting them as birthday gifts for us..well I'm sure he sees it as something for himself as well lol) so I thought I'd pop on this forums and see if I could find any information on different types of bows etc etc. I'm partial to the Bear Anarchy (as that's what he's using and really seems to love it) but I struggle to pull his back (it's 70lbs, and being that I do hair my arm strength isn't so great). I've tried the 60lb at the store, but it was still a little bit of a struggle (I could pull it back, but keeping it there was a bit of a struggle as well), so now I"m starting back at square one. I'm still considering the Anarchy, but if there are any other women (or men even lol) on this forums who would feel like maybe tossing a few recommendations my way it'll give me something to research while I'm off this week (benefit of being a self employed hairdresser/homemaker lol..lot's of time for research :P). If it matters for helping choose a bow I am 5'11, 140lbs and my sister is 5'4 115lbs. Anyway, I'm pretty excited about getting into this sport. My boyfriend has tried some of my interests (knitting, which he is surprisingly good at..he's not had to purchase socks for three years now lol) so I feel I owe it too him to give one of his greatest passions an honest shot (pun intended ) (and I've sort of always wanted to give it a go anyway). Oh...! haha..hi..my name is Alice, and I'm 24. I'm a licensed cosmetologist (makeup, hair etc), but mainly I'm a homemaker. I've always been a girly tom-boy (if that makes sense :\) so I'm not afraid of camping, backpacking, shooting, ATV's etc so bowhunting is just another thing to get me out of the house on weekends (or through the week if we set up a little range on our farm). We moved back from California a year ago, and I think finally I've convinced him to settle down and stay in Ohio (I'm not one for living in cities being that I was raised in Southern Ohio so Los Angles was a horrible place for me..I"m finally back in my element lol). Anyway, figured I should introduce myself a bit, no?
Welcome to the site and this great sport. You have so many options in bows and I would just be sure not to only limit your search to just Bear. Nothing wrong with that brand at all but remember what feels great to one person won't to another. I have purchased several of the Diamond Razor Edge for my daughters and girlfriend and have been super happy with them and they all love them. Not saying that is the right bow for you but one I would suggest you look at before your final decision. Depending on your budget you will have many options that also include Mathew's, Hoyt, PSE and several others. Good luck in your search and keep us posted on how it goes and what you decide on!
Hey Alice,,you need to find a youth or ladies Bow that would fit you. even 40 lbs will get you by if its out fitted with the right acessories! welcome to bowhunting.com!
Welcome to the site Alice! Ferg & Crick both have great advice. Gander may have a large selection, but don't be afraid to check out a local archery shop. The guys there will most likely be much more knowledgeable that the guys at a big box store like Gander.
