I started with a hoyt mt sport and they have a great selection of bows that aren't too expensive. But if I had to start over Id look at either the PSE brute which my cousin owns or a Mission my mathews. Both are around 500 but if you are going into it seriously starting with a fast, light bow is a great advantage. SInce, I have owned two mathews and I believe they are the best, but you pay for what you get with their high end bows. Again go shoot a bunch of them but something light is great especially when trying to develope a consistant tight group when starting out. Both bows mentioned above are over 300 fps and thus are plenty fast. I also would recommend purchasing and setting up at bow shop, not cabelas or bass pro. They will do a better job setting up the bow and will offer much more help. Might be slightly more expensive but its worth it in the long run to get a well tuned bow. Hope this helps.
