I am new at bowhunting.. in fact i have never bowhunted before. My wife got me a used bow for my birthday and i know nothing about it. what i would like is information on how to use the sight and what each colors mean.

    Thank you.. david frye

Green means go, red means stop, and yellow pins are for when the deer is proceeding with caution. :d

This post is more loaded than a M-80 with a cut fuse.....I am staying away from this one.

Actually no gentlemen. This one is legit. Please help the man out with any suggestions you may have.

I did a original response to Mr. Frye as well.. but thought it would be best to get other opinions on the subject since I'm not much on the technical side of bowhunting.

    Thanks again.

I'd suggest he sign up, hang out and ask away. Read the front pages about basic stuff and come here to learn a lot of info.

    To the new guy:
The colors mean nothing specifically, just a way to help you discern the yardage difference between them.
When properly adjusted,(both the bow and the sight) your arrow's point of impact will correspond to a pin at a specific distance, with your top pins being at a distance closer than the bottom ones. There should be adjustments on the sight that will allow you to move your pin to the point of impact of your arrow.

Your best bet is to find someone who's shot a bow before or go to a knowledgable pro shop to see if the bow fits you and ot get some basic information on how to shoot one. Whatever you do, do NOT pull the bow back and let the string go without an arrow on it.

Mike - you may want to direct this gentleman to this article here: BOW SIGHT SELECTION

The only input I really have is to stick with something simple and tough. I've broken and/or bent a few sights and pins in my day which totally sucks. Keep it simple and you'll be much better off, especially when it comes to bowhunting. :tu:

Personally, I recommend Copper John sights. They've been very tough and reliable over the past several years for me.

I agree. A few weeks ago when I was sighting in a new sight and preparing for my hog hunt some guy who claimed to previously work in a proshop for 15 years or something tried to tell me you adjust a sight away from the arrow. I appeased him just to show him how wrong he could have been. I kept on telling him, "You chase the arrow." He didn't believe me. ;)

Always remember, when adjusting a bowsight you CHASE the arrow. If you are making adjustments, and your arrows are hitting left of where you are aiming, adjust the sight to the left or vice versa. The same is true if your arrow is hitting high or low of where you are aiming.....FOLLOW THE ARROW! :tu:

First suggestion I'd make is that he either get into a proshop or have someone that knows get him measured up to see that the bow fits him properly. There's no better way to learn poor form and bad habits than to shoot a bow that doesn't fit.

When it comes to sights, I'm a big fan of simple. Yeah, micro adjust windage and elevation certainly have their place, but.....Too much stuff to come loose. Myself, I personally like a single pin slider sight. No confusion on which pin to use. For a hunting situation, I leave my pin set on 25 yards. I'm 1 1/2" high at 20 yards and 1 1/2" low at 30. Doesn't get much simpler than that.

The suggestions listed above are great. Here are a couple more. It's not necessary, but will help him steady his bow. Get a sight or buy aftermarket level to put at the bottom of the sight window. This will help him control canting his bow to the side. Buy making sure the level is dead on, that will naturally help maintain his bow in a steady upright position.
Also, when considering fiber optic pins, is the ability to add a light. Reason is that if he takes up hunting out of a blind, there is no or very little sunlight to illuminate the pins enough when held against the brightness of the open window.
I like my Trophy ridge because you don't need tools to adjust the pins, they have lever locks. Tru glo also has a new sight that is adjustable w/o tools.
Just thought these might be a consideration. Buy it right & buy it once.
