    Hello everyone,

So this year, I've decided to switch to bowhunting after years of rifle hunting. I just ordered a Mathews Z7 Extreme tactical. I just have some general questions about the bow and bowhunting:

    1. Did I select the right bow? How has your experience with this bow been?
    2. When I buy a rifle, I know it will last me a lifetime. Can I say the same about a compound bow?
    3. Do you find that compound bows need more maintenance and TLC than say a bolt-action rifle?

    Many Thanks,

    Jerry

Z7 extreme tactical is a brand new bow for this year but i have Z7 from last year and that bow shoots very well. I have not heard anything bad about the Z7 series at all. I also switched to bow from rifle and the thing with a bow is if you take care of it and do routine maintenace on it like you should with a rifle, your bow should last a while. personally i think a rifle needs a bit more TLC because if you don't take care of a rifle, it rusts.

also, welcome to bowhunting. hope all works out well for you on the hunt

    1) i swear by hoyt but matthews is fine
    2) it depends how much tourture you put it through
    3) it depends if your still growing and you just need to replace a pin get new broadheads etc. so its really just like a rifle

Considering I shoot the same bow, I'd say you made a good choice. :D

After shooting my Z7 Xtreme for a few months now I'm extremely happy with it. Without question the smoothest drawing bow I've ever owned. Surprisingly the compact axle-to-axle length doesn't bother me one bit. It's very forgiving and accurate at long distances. I'm shooting out to 50 yards with no problem.

With proper care and maintenance it's not uncommon for a compound bow to last a long, long time. I know people using 20 year old bows with great success. Your desire to upgrade to something new may very well be the determining factor in getting a new bow long before this one breaks down or no longer works.

Proper care of a compound bow is easy. Keep it out of extreme heat, don't drop or dry fire it, and replace the strings/cables every 2-3 years. Once a year bring it to the Mathews retailer you purchased it from and have them look it over to make sure everything is in time and you'll be set.

    Good luck with it! :tu:

Thanks guys for your input. I did shoot a lot of bows before I decided on the z7 extreme, which felt the best in my hands. However, I know shooting a bow at the range for 10 minutes will not give me a complete picture of how the bow will perform in the field.

If you have stories (good/bad) about your z7 extreme's durability, accuracy, etc. in the field, please share.

    Thanks,

    Jerry

I shoot my xtreme almost every day. On days I can't shoot I get stir crazy. So far it's been nothing but great.
I've only had it hunting one weekend so far, it was a turkey hunt a couple hours away. I had it in the pouring rain / thunderstorms, dirt, ground... no problem at all.

Like Justin said, keep your routine maintainence up and no worries at all.
