I have several Scott wrist type trigger pull releases. I am interested in back tension or thumb type releases. I have read a lot about Carter. Any suggestions for my first BT release?

Just got the Carter - Simple 1 and I really like it. They are expensive but well worth the price I believe. My brother shoot mine about a half a dozen times and he ordered one also. I love the thumb release if you are in a ground blind or tree stand that way you don't have to take your eye off the deer when you grab your bow the release is already connected to your loop.

I have a Tru Ball three finger back tension release. Kinda expensive, but well worth it. It significantly improved my shooting. Takes time to get used to the system, but after that it really helps especially with trigger punch. I would recommend going to a local pro shop and trying a few out, at least to see how many fingers you want. I think most go from 2 fingers all the way to 4 and it's nice to shoot them to see whats most comfortable for you.

Take a look at the Whalens Hooker. We are dealers for them. They are a SUPER simple release that is very easy to learn. You can't punch yourself like you can with a hinge either, and its not a thumb trigger that will lead you to TP/consistency issues. They are a great release that just hasn't got the attention because they are a smaller company.
