I posted this In the bowhunting section but figured I'd post It here for my traditional friends who don't venture much to the bowhunting section of the forum. After hunting with the recurve pictured below for 17 straight years It was time to replace It. 7 bear were taken with It and right around 30 some deer were also taken by It. A few years ago It started loosing pounds. It was originally at 73lbs at my draw length but It's now 58lbs. Top limb has had a few splintering Issues the last couple years along with some noise with It too. I might finish the year out with It yet. Not sure what I'm going to do. My 2012 60 Inch Schafer Silvertip Takedown Recurve (60lbs at 28 Inches. Riser Is redwood with black walnut. Limbs are Russian olive. Antler tips on the limb. [/quote]
I said it in the other thread, but will say it again. That's a beauty! I am a little jealous even though I had to give trad bows up due to back issues (2 surgeries). I always loved the Schafer's since I read an article about Paul Schafer in an Outdoor Life magazine in the 90's. I have it scanned to a .pdf around here somewhere.
Beautiful Tip! I had 8 of them over the years...great shooters. As for the old bow, I'd get limbs made for it
Holy cow 8 tips Is allot of bows!! lol!! Thanks Jim. As for my old bow, It's a Windwalker. The company was from Minnesota. They no longer are making bows. Could a person still have limbs made from someone else you think?
Thanks Coop!! Sorry about your surgeries. Paul was quite the hunter that's for sure!! My dad got to meet him years ago at a Pope and Young convention. My dad was Invited by a friend and Barry Wensel and someone else to go on a hunt In Alaska. Schafer also went on that hunt along with Paul Brunner. That was MANY years ago. Dad thought the hunt was too spendy so he didn't go. My dad still kicks himself for not going.
I agree with JimPic. I'd have a set of limbs custom made for it. Too many memories to give up on that ol' bow!
And the were all fantastic bows...wasn't too crazy about the longbow I had though. Absolutely beautiful but it seemed a little sluggish. Call me crazy but I always seemed to go back to Black Widows. As for replacement limbs, I'm sure there are bowyers that would fit limbs to that riser. Rose Oak does aftermarket limbs for Bear t/d's and a few others that I can't think of at the moment. Couple hundred bucks and you have a new bow. I remember when you redid the riser
hey buddy... how are you getting along with the new bow? know you mentioned some problems before. hopefully it's not an issue. chris
Hey there Chris!! Honestly It's going to stay In the box till hunting season Is over. I'm comfortable with my old one. Kind of afraid to jump Into a new bow towards the end of the season. Our season ends at the end of the year.
I certainly understand not wanting to "change horses in mid-season".. but you worry me if you can have that in the house and never shot an arrow thru it.. lol chris
Steve, that is a lovely bow mate, I hope you have many years hunting with her!!!. Just got myself a Border Black Douglas recurve, will post a piccy or two soon.
