I'm looking to purchase my 1st bow. I want to extend my hunting season so that would b the main purpose for it. I've been doing a lot of reading, on this forum n others. The prevailing advice seems to be to try as many bows as I can. My question is being someone who has never shot a bow seriously, I have no frame of reference as to what actually is a good bow for me. Would it make more sense to buy a starter bow like a PSE Vision or Diamond Infinite Edge to start then move on to a better bow? My budget is around $500 all in. Would a used bow make more sense? If so, which bow from past years would b similar to the adjustability of the vision or infinite edge? Thanks Vincent
I would say with that budget the ones you mentioned or one of the Mission bows would be great starter bows for you. If you find one you like and feels good to you I would go that route. With the quality of bows today even at your price range I would go with new one. A few years ago I am not sure that I would have said that. Let us know what you end up getting!
Mission line is a great line of bows like jfergus7 mentioned. But again, shoot different brands. What people on here say is the best should be taken lightly, it's all personal preference. Personally when I started we bought brand new and as much as I don't wanna admit it, it was a waste of money. One thing led to another and I ended up not putting more then 100 arrows through my first bow. Ended up selling it and waiting a bit. When I decided to get back into it, used was never a question, it was the answer. You can find some very nice bows for around your price range. Just depends again on what YOU want. New bows, old bows... they all kill game. The most important thing is that they property fit you. I'd suggest heading to a local proshop to have your draw length measured. That's your best starting point. Next most important factor is your budget. You have a pretty nice one so you could easily look at PSE or Diamond like you mentioned or Mission like Ferg & Alissa suggested. Of course, at $500 you could probably find a flagship bow that's 3-4 years old all set up. The truth is its hard to find a bad bow these days. I love Mathews, but the fit in your hands is what is key.
Thanks for the advice. I think I'll pick up an infinite edge n have it setup for me at the shop. Then when I know what I want in a bow, I'll go pick up a "better" one. I can then give the infinite edge to my 12yr old daughter to get her started.
Not too sure how much information I can offer as I have only been into the sport for a few months now. I had the same question when I was scouring the net on as much information I could find. After multiple searches, oddly enough I found the same bows on Amazon but a whole lot cheaper. I ended up ordering the Bear Authority RTH and snagged it for $499. I bought the TruFire Hardcore release also on Amazon for $69 and got lucky by acquiring arrows from a few friends. I was hesitant as I never shot a bow before and was about to drop almost $600 for something I did not know if I would like it or not. Honestly, I have been out every weekend since I received it a month ago. It has become more addicting than shooting a gun. Besides, being stationed over here in England, guns are forbidden, however, bows are legal. This was the leading factor why I got into the sport. I really hope you can find the enjoyment I have. Best of luck in finding your first bow.
In my opinion i say get a new bow. Theres tons in that price range id say go get a bear or pse. Good bows for the money that work just as good and some are even better. My freind just got started in hunting and he bought the pse stinger for like 350-400. Lol anymore thats a steal and tgats the price anywhere. And my other freind just got the bear method i think for around that too. Id just go and shoot tho like everyone else says.
Well, I went and checked out some local stores. 1st one wasn't very good, stood around for 15 mins before I had to go ask for help. Gave me some info, had me handle some bows and that was it. 2nd store was much better. Showed me everything from entry level to several levels past my price range. Then they offered to let me shoot some! After shooting the Vision, Brute, Charger and Faktor, I decided on the Charger. Felt good in my hands, balanced, very low recoil felt. Put a deposit down and will be going back on Monday to be setup and pick out the rest of my gear. Very excited!
