Hello everyone. This is my first post here. I was just wondering what people think of Ohios new tagging system for deer and turkey? http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/WOC...wocrmssprturkhunters/tabid/23381/Default.aspx
I don't like it either. I believe it's gonna lead to a lot of false or even non reporting which ultimately could affect our bag limts. In other words, people are gonna shoot bucks and report them as does or not report them at all. I guess they're gonna leave the policing up to us so as always, if I hear of anyone poaching I will turn them in...Because it also affects me.
Or they will be tagged by the "hunters" mom, wife, kid, girlfriend, etc, etc... It makes it to easy for those who want to go over the bag limit on deer and turkey.
We've been doing it that way for years in MD. I won't say whether it is good or bad but I can't see why it would cause more unreported animals. Just because there is check stations doesn't mean a person HAS to take the animal there and report it. If a person's inclination is to poach an animal I just can't see where a check station makes that any more difficult. Certainly the electronic process makes checking an animal under your wife's name a lot easier but it doesn't seem all that difficult to swing by the house and pick your wife up on the way to the check station.
I agree it's been done in the past...However the new system will make it MUCH easier for them to poach. I'd be willing to bet we see bag limits, etc. change in the next 2-3 years and I'll blame it on this new system.
How does it make it easier to poach? If I wanted to poach I could shoot multiple deer every year and I guarantee I would never get caught. It just isn't that hard.
Poaching = shooting more deer than allowed, not reporting deer, reporting wrong sex, the list goes on. I can assure you that having check stations has reduced the amount of non reported deer and it certianly has eliminated reporting deer of the wrong sex. Check stations also helped the economy because often times when a person checked in a deer they would also buy goods and or services from said business. I know because I used to work at an outdoor store that was a check station and people would buy snacks, drinks, ammo, etc.
I know what poaching is . I just don't see how having a check station prevents it or makes it any harder. Check stations are where honest hunters go. Poachers can, and will, do all the things poachers do with, or without, check stations. Not really trying to argue but how can you assure that check stations reduced the amount of non-reported deer unless you know of all the non-reported deer? If they weren't reported how can anyone know an accurate count? I agree it would certainly prevent the reporting of the wrong sex but, IMO, if I were the type to cheat by reporting the wrong sex then I would likely just not report the deer, check station or not.
I agree with you. I'm not really as concerned with non reporting as I am reporting wrong sex. If people shoot bucks and claim them as does it's really gonna mess up our current bag limits. When you have to check a deer at a check station you CAN'T claim the wrong sex.
I don't mind it. Saves me from having to find & stop at a check station. Saves honest folks time. Dishonest folks will be such regardless of "check in" method.
Amen Brother!!! I know too many people who kill 'em and put 'em on family members tags..... So easy, even when you have to take it into a checking station, it's not funny. A girl I work with has killed a buck every year for the last 5 yrs. and never been in the woods.....
I agree with rybo, there are good things about it and the "bad", thats the difference between people who are honest and those who aren't... In illinois we have been checking deer in by phone for a while now. I just hate how you don't get to talk to someone on the phone, it's always voice animated, so like talking to a tree....
im just not sure what the point of it is? to save money? to make more money off of fines? simply for the hunters conviniounce? for odnrs convinionce?
All the reasons above. I think the ODNR realize's that it's no harder for somebody to not check in their deer than it is to not report it or report it as the wrong sex. If they get stopped and the deer is marked as the wrong sex they are just as screwed as they would be if they got caught not checking in their deer. I think that more deer may get reported this new way because some people that normally wouldn't check in their deer will report them. Some people won't check in their deer because they consider it a waste of time if they are confident they won't get caught. They got their deer, they are happy and they move on with life until next season. I think some of these people might be willing to report their deer now that it is so convenient. By the way, welcome to the forum Scotty!
If they got stopped the tag on the animal would not tell the officer anything, in Ohio our tags are either sex tags. We get two either sex tags (though only one can be used for a buck). I am not saying this is going to make the honest people go over their bag limits, I am saying that it could easily sway those on the fence to do so. A poacher will poach either way.
UNfortunatly all the above is correct... I know IL has had the phone in system for awhile, but here in OH where were are over hunted to begin with.... all the ODNR did was make it easier for people to say they shot a doe and keep buck hunting.... Hopefully karma kicks in a people will do the right thing, but we all know how that works.... I can honestly say I would rather go get a metal tag and work my way to another state to buck hunt, but i can see the phone in killing our herd even more!
