Hello again, I am new to archery, I say archery because I have never been bow hunting but I do plan on it.. someday. My girls (7 years old) are also new and learning. They are shooting a Diamond, not sure weight. Well, when we have our Family Archery Time (F.A.T. - oh that just made me LOL) I have noticed that they are both able to pull back with ease. They usually shoot between 12 and 16 arrows each session, sometimes twice a day. Now here is where I have a question.. should we leave the weight where it is now until they have better accuracy or increase it some. I'm pretty sure we have to go back to the shop and have them re-measured and have the length checked too but wondered if weight should be increased. Of course I'll ask when we go to shop but thought I would ask here too since I'm not sure when we will be able to get there and it's weighing on my mind.. LOL Thanks, Carol OH yes.. one more question.. how do we teach them not to GRAB the grip?? I have a hard with that myself since I think the bow is going to fall out of my hand.
I would leave it where it is. IMO you want them to have an easy draw. At their age they are still growing when you do increase weight be sure it isn't too much. Wouldn't want a shoulder injury at such a young age. Enjoy shooting with them! What you are doing is awesome!
As for the grip issue.... There is a company that makes a training aid just for this. It is simply a small cushion with an elastic loop that goes over a finger placing the cushion between the grip and journey hand forcing a loose grip. Sadly for the life of me I can't remember the name of it lol
awesome man, More families should have FAT lol. What I did with my son (hes 5) so I know anyone can pick up on it, I took some thumb tacks grinded down the tips and then took clear tape and taped them to the front of his grip. It taught him not to close his grip like he was choking it and leave his fingers open. After a few days he didnt have that problem anymore.
Tacklebox, thanks for the advice! Never thought of shoulder injury. My only concern was that they were pulling back TOO easily. We did increase just a bit and it seems to have helped their aim. I think you are talking about the True Shot Coach. I was going to order one for me.. but I think I'm retraining myself. I will probably order something for the girls.. or perhaps follow JamesxCreedx's advice with the tape and filed down tacks. Now to go back to the pro shop and have them look at my bow. We noticed yesterday that my nock is not aligned correctly, or at least that is what it looks like. Can the nock slip or perhaps the string "settled"? I got the bow last October and only shot about 40 to 50 arrows between then and January, until the last 2 or 3 weeks were we have been shooting almost daily. Carol
