Bought a new pair of Mossy Oak MO2878 boots from Meijer for $69.99. The box claims "400 grams Thinsulate" and "Waterproof" which were the main reasons I bought them. (I'm a whiny old b**** when my feet get wet or cold. Call me a wuss, I don't care ) Went out scouting today in light rain, (off the beaten path, of course,) and my socks were soaked within 15 minutes. I didn't step in any standing water, just walking through moderate to heavy underbrush. I can't imagine how horrible they would be in the snow for Muzzle-loader season in December. Did I expect too much for the money? Did I expect too much from the Mossy Oak brand (made in China, of course)? I'm thinking about returning them and spending a little more for something that has Gore-tex, which was my gut instinct to begin with. What brand of boots do you guys recommend? I'm in Eastern Michigan and these boots have to be good for below freezing temps, snow, and WATERPROOF!!! Thank you Gentlemen, and happy hunting!!
I had a pair of cheap boots from dlcks sporting goods. They were the Field and Stream brand. Paid $70 for them and they lasted one season. They started to leak shortly after. I got another pair of Field and Stream boots but these have GoreTex and more insulation and they've worked great this season. They were about $120. They breathe and let out moisture when my feet sweat in the warmer months and i'm sure they'll do fine in the colder months. They've also not leaked yet - I've crossed streams quite a few times this year. I'd say stick with GoreTex. Anything else claiming to be "waterproof" may be waterproof but may not allow your feet to breathe. Lower priced (lower quality) are probably more prone to leaking as well. However, I'd still expect a pair of $70 boots to last at least one season.
Amen Slider. I figured the same thing, for $70 I'd get at least a season out of them. Doesn't pay to go cheap on certain things anymore, that's for sure. I'm sure these boots would be fine for a dry, moderately warm fall day, but those are the days I hate going out, since I hunt public land. I'd rather go out on crappy days when most other's are sitting at home. Thanks for the reply!
I would check out irish setters. The only downside is price imo. However I only wear them for icefishing cuz they're too warm for bowhunting. However they have other models besides the one I have. These are the warmest boots i've ever put on my foot. My bowhunting ones are LaCrosses which aren't bad but do get a little cold and are not water proof by any means. http://hunt.irishsetterboots.com/ir...-pac-dark-coffeemossy-oak-break-up-camouflage these are the ones I own. I bought them for like 130 ish. They're stated at like 160 I think.
I grew up using rocks that cost around $100. Very Durable and good for the price. Downside is they are heavy and loud in a tree stand. I purchased Redhead bass pro bran boots this year for 89.99. 1,000Grams Thinsulate. Light weight, durable and water proof. I'm not 100% convinced they are 1,000 grams but they are much warmer then my 100 gram Thinsulate. Happy so far.
