I hunted there a couple years ago & you must draw a tag there. Some areas/units are easier than others to draw on, but your Tag & License is around 800.00---You can also look into land owner tags if you do not draw & your odds are good or decent if you want to shell out another 1500.00-2500.00 for that additional tag too!

New Mexico is an Awesome place to Elk hunt. I've been there twice and it is definitely worth the $$$ and the hassle.

I hunted west of Albuquerque around Mt Taylor, I believe it was called. The last trip I killed a 6 X 6 that was aged by teeth at 10 1/2 years :)

    I was a Happy camper!

Cost for the tag is $766

No you can not buy a tag over the counter. Landowner tags range north of $3000
I would tell you that to draw you have to apply. New Mexico does not award preference points for thos who are unsuccessful making your odds not as bad compared to starting the process say in Arizona. I have applied for the past 4 years and drew 2 years back to back in the Unit that had draw odds of 12%....I have hunted Colorado 9 times and not taking anything from that hunt as I have had some good hunts and great memories. However, the bulls you have opportunities at in New Mexico are bulls that make magazine covers like this one....

    Apply
