Hello I am a new member from Scotland, thought id join because im going to need alot of advice and tip's when I buy my first bow which will hopefully be next month. Basically I have grown up hunting Red and Roe Deer and have always been fascinated with hunting in America. A couple of years ago I listened to a Joe Rogan Podcast with Cameron Hanes and that was enough to start my obsession with bow hunting. The problem is Bow Hunting is illegal over here. Bow's are legal but hunting is not. I plan on buying a Hoyt Powermax soon and start learning to set it up and hit targets then eventually travel to places where it is legal in Europe and the US eventually. Any advice on buying my first bow, and especially setting it up will be greatly appreciated! I dont know anyone else with a Bow and there are no shops in the country i know of that have any idea about them so im relying on the hours of youtube videos I have watched to help get me started. Cheers, Sean
Welcome! Its not going to be easy without a bow shop to try different things but I for one would enjoy helping you build a rig.
Yeah I know i have a challenge ahead without a bow shop, but im really interested in the setting up so hopefully its a skill ill slowly get good at myself. Your help would be great. So do you think I should build a bow rather than buy a package?
hahaha yeah when they set the law for which arms could be used for hunting back in 65 there was no one there to represent Bow hunting so it never got accepted as a legal hunting weapon total bullshit that should be reviewed and legalised by now! But I do have plenty of private land where I can "practise" stalking Deer with my Bow.
Hello , I am originally from the UK , but have lived in Turkey for over 40 years. I've been hunting over 50 years and I took up bow hunting last year. I also learnt a few lessons. Whereas bow hunting is legal in Turkey , bow hunters are very rare. My first step was to decide on a bow. ( wrong ) There are a lot of Hoyt target bows and no Mathews bows in country. We have a dealer for both brands who only deals with special orders , nothing in stock. I now have a Halon 32 which I bought from a Mathews dealer in Germany. Go to an archery club and get some lessons. See how the equipment works. Find one with compound bows. Learn what weight you can comfortably pull. Real draw length. This experience should help you make the right decisions when you buy. Find a dealer who has bows and accessories in stock and try them out. Remember , he will try and sell you what he has in stock. Don't rush. When you have identified all your equipment , check the reviews on sites like this. Some real eye openers. Budget also for a set of quality strings and cables. Keep the originals as spares. Maintaining your own bow is not so difficult. However it's good though to have a fall back position if you run into difficulties. Also remember that spares for Hoyt and Mathews cannot be ordered over the internet. You have to get them from a dealer. You can also wait some weeks for a new string , if it has to come from the US. I currently shoot a Halon 6/32 at 60lb's. I have a Fast eddie sight , G5 rest and Victory VAP arrows. Any questions .. shoot away.
It is a beautiful country, more so on the 5 or 6 days a year when its not raining haha. And thank you.
