Hello all. I'm new to the forum and new to bow hunting. I gun hunted as a kid but haven't done much deer hunting since high school. I picked up a Matthews Reezen in January and have been looking forward to deer season ever since. My initial question to this forum is- It's still pretty warm in North Carolina (we're looking at a high of 87 today in Raleigh). My house is about 25 minutes from my land. As a kid I always remember hunting when it was colder (reg gun season). Even then, my dad and I would field dress it at the land and stop by a gas station to get ice for the trip home. I'm worried that in the heat I won't have time to get the deer home to fully process before I would be wasting meat. I feel comfortable cleaning it, but I'm worried about my time with the truck ride home. Should I be worried or just get it done as fast as I can?
Welcome! Packing the deer full of ice is fine for the overnight, or a few hours if really hot. As long as you get to it as soon as you can, you have no worries. Good luck!
Welcome neighbor! If its hot, I'll go to one of the processors nearest where I hunt after I field dress.
Welcome to the site. If it gets that hot and you really get worried, you can always quarter it out. A cheap ol cooler from Wally World and a bag of ice should suffice until you get home. Once again welcome and good luck. Shoot straight Box
Welcome to the site moonraker... spread the ribcage open and drive REAL fast. Just kiddin' man... you'll probably be okay if you get it to the processer ASAP. Best of luck arrowing a deer.
