hey all, I recently got married and my wife has told me her family has 30 acres of unused land in upstate N.Y. We are planning a trip next weekend to see how it looks and find the spikes for property lines. Im also bringing my trail camera to put it up and i was wondering, should i put an attractant near the camera to see if i have some deer? My thoughts are if the land has been unchecked or at least not maintained that most of it will be tall grass. Since this is my first season of hunting, i have no knowledge. any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I'd say doesn't hurt to throw a bag of corn or something just to see. As long as no law against it and to get an idea if there's anything there I think it would be better. I think if you were later looking to pattern I'd say not having any additional variables, but as a starting point to find out that's what I would do. And just looking for signs around for past use, trails and stuff. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
First off, congrats on the marriage & hunting land! I have to agree with Turro, if legal, starting up a mineral site to take inventory isn't a bad idea. Especially this time of year as we come out of winter.
I too would like to say Congratulations on the marriage and getting a good spot of land to hunt. I would try Monster Raxx and set a trailcam up near it and see what happens.
Congrats on the land and the marriage! I too am in the same boat as you with the land and the marriage. Since you are new to hunting, baiting in NY is illegal so it might not be the best idea. If the property has not been maintained - which mine was not - you should be able to find some good deer runs pretty easily if the deer population is good (which I'm sure it will be). Make sure you make a note of those runs and find good trees to set a stand in nearby. Like Turro said, keep a look out for other deer sign as well. If no one has used the property in while, keep looking up at the trees because someone might already have stands hanging in there. As for setting up a camera, I would explore for awhile and pick out the best run you can find or if the property has a field I would put the camera in a corner pointing out on the field. I have had good luck with that in the early season to take inventory. Get a security box too because you never know who has been in there and people get territorial even when the property has never belonged to them. I am sorry, i do not want to seem like a downer and not everyone is out there to get you, but I was in the exact same situation. My wife and i bought our property but several others who had no connection to the original owner thought that the owned the property because they had hunting there for 20+ years. I dont like hearing about people losing there hunting land but i am also building my home there and something about letting people i dont know onto my property doesnt sit well with me. Good luck and have a great time exploring!
If its in NY someone is probably hunting it, friends of the family, friends of friends cousins brothers uncle have him permission...in any event don't be totally surprised if you have company at some point. Trail cams won't hurt...make sure you lock them until you know the neighbors ect... Skip the corn and or minerals as they both great ways to get tickets in NY ...good luck with the property.
Are corn and minerals illegal year round? I know many states have different regulations on them, just curious if its a during season issue or time period around of any time. I guess I always have MN in my thoughts. I saw it come up for other states and hadn't seen for you guys yet. I know if opportunity comes for me to be in a different state I'd check completely on all that first, but I don't plan on moving and the possibilities of hunting away would be with people that knew. Salt or minerals are illegal in NY at any time of the year. As is corn or any other feed placed for deer or on lands inhabited by deer.
That's about the toughest restrictions I've heard. How about food plots? Attracting scents? Deer scents in season? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Always good news to get access to new hunting grounds, especially if it's in the family! Hate to hear the restrictions are so tough, guess you would have to resort to some sort of 'other' attractant, that or well used trails.
the person who did the hunter's ed and bowhunter's ed has private lands that he has access to and i know that he has used scents. i was wondering if i could put down some throw n' grow and plop a trail cam next weekend. Actually I read somewhere that NY is looking at the baiting laws to at least make it a little less strict.
Food plots are acceptable in NY because they more "natural" sources of feed. Plus, upstate NY is heavily farmed so in my opinion it would be hard to say that food plots could be considered illegal. I believe that baiting is illegal in NY because there have been confirmed cases of CWD in some areas. Scents are legal. How did your first trip go Ricpac? What'd you find??
