For many of us hunting is more than a hobby, its a source of food. I recently went home on leave from Iraq. I deployed to Iraq before the recession has gotten to where it is now. The thing that I noticed while I was home was how many families did not have enough money to buy food for their families. What broke my heart most was hearing on the radio how many children were going hungry during the winter break because they were not being fed by the school districts. Now here is the idea. My idea is to give back to the community. Here it is from any game gotten during the hunting season give a portion as little or as much meat from your game to a food bank. I am right now only wanting to know how well this idea will be received in the hunting community so if you could give me your thoughts it would be much appreciated. Thank you.
There are several of us that donate at least 1 deer per year. I usually donate to whoever the processer is sending them to, but this year I found a family to donate too that was down on their luck. I also do this with the sausage I get from any hogs I shoot. Its cheap enough for me to donate. Its also something anyone can cook.
I try to donate at least 1 deer a year to hunters helping the hungry. I have not the last 2 years because the butcher I used to donate to stopped taking them. I'm trying to find a new one in the area so I can start again.
I donate at least 2 to a family I know, every year. They have 11 children. I'm not condemning others for their opinions on this. But, I've been chastised for this practice. I'm OK with that. Everyone's entitled to their opinion.
who in their right mind would have a problem with someone donating deer to a family in need?? Hell I give deer meat away to people who have plenty to eat, they just happen to like deer meat and I just happen to have plenty of it...nevermind Jeff, I know the answer already!
Does your home town have a Rotary club or something similar? Our local Rotary teamed up with local sponsors and the local butcher and posts adds all over town encouraging hunters to donate whole deer to the local food banks. The sponsors get ad time on the posters, plus some goodwill...while the butcher gets paid $75/deer to just ground and put into 1 lb packages (I also believe the IL sportsman against hunger contributes some of this $75). The food banks get stocked with some of the leanest protein available...and it promotes more does being taken in our area which is badly needed - we donate multiple deer each year to this. And I also have the names each year of a few families that want their own and typically can get them a deer as well if the time is right when we harvest them. Good Luck!
