Old set up had golden tip hunter which shot great. With 100 grain tips they came in at 390. New full metal jackets from easton are just over 440 grains. Smaller diameter. Aluminum cover make them feel heavy. I'm excited to see what they will do to game. Probably use for deer this year too. I'm guessing they will do like every other broadhead/arrow combo and kill if the user doesn't fail them. Using the trophy taker shuttle t's. Like them a lot. Curious what everyone else is slinging at Elk and honestly just wanted another topic to talk elk.
My son shots the full metal jackets and loves them. Two years ago he shot a yearling elk the arrow went thru the elk and into a tree the elk was by. For a few seconds the elk was pinned to the tree. His arrows come in at 510 grains. My son is also 6'2" and has a draw length of 31 inches and shoots at 70lbs. The reason I say this is I am 5'8". If he didn't look like his brothers I would question my wife I shot the gold tip kinetics. It comes in at 405 grains. I like to be over 400 grains for elk.
I will be shooting Carbon Express Mayhem Hunters this year with 100 grain slick trick standards. This is my second year with the arrows but my first with the broadheads so i am very curious to see what they will do. I believe my total arrow weight sits around 450 grains.
I did the math and my total arrow weight is 438 grains. I have shot a pretty wide variety of arrows and the Mayhem Hunters have flat out impressed me. I don't like spending a lot of money on arrows but i think it is definitely one of those areas where you get what you pay for so it's worth spending the extra cash. I have shot them from 10 yards out to 60 yards and i get consistent flight every time as long as i do my part. The only live animal i have shot with them was a grouse last year so i wouldn't consider that a real test of the arrow but i bet they work great on elk too.
