well, I pulled the trigger and bought me a black female lab today. She will be ready in two weeks for pick up. Plan on training her to blood track and shed hunt. Any one got any good tips?! Also I'm looking for help on a good name. Lets see what you got!

I think it was "virginia shadow" or something similar to that who had some excellent tracking dogs she had trained

Love them Lab puppies. How about "Jet" or because she looks soft and sweet "Honey Bear".

    First of all, congratulations!!!!

If you are looking for someone who can assist you and your dog with training, your local ANR/Fish & Wildlife/DNR website should often have a list of Deer tracking dog owners listed online. These folks are often more than willing to assist in helping newcomers & their dogs with training/techniques.

Hope this helps, best of luck!

Appreciate it man! I'll check into a lot of this stuff. She comes from a great bloodline. I hope she comes in handy especially because I'm color blind so seeing blood sometimes is a chore if its like pen drops on leaves that already have red tints to them lol. I'll use the antlers from my buck last year she can play with in hopes she picks up sheds!

Congrats!!!! Great dogs!!! Unfortunately my experience with them are as gun dogs only for duck and goose hunting so I can't help much with blood tracking and shed hunting advice, but I would love to try to train one to do both though!

My last one was for duck hunting. But honestly I'm so ate up with deer hunting now, that's what it will be used for. Maybe a little of duck hunting but either way it works out I have me a new companion at the house!

I hear that man we just love deer hunting and waterfowl hunting and our goal every year is to try our best to tag out before we can start waterfowl hunting, if that doesn't happen we try to split it up best we can, the struggle is real haha! Best of luck with her man she is a beauty!

Yea my goal the last couple seasons was to tag out on my buck and move to the ducks. Well with the last two seasons I wish that could honestly happen but I'm still looking for my buck haha. Deer hunting is just hard and humbling but so rewarding at the same time.

I train dogs for a living. 1. Get her to trust you and respect you. She will want to please.
    2. Make it fun. Use her natural retrieving instincts to bring back an antler. Have it be easy at first. Praise is the key. Let her know what she is doing right. Then make it gradually more difficult. Same idea with blood. Build small successes on each other. Do not push too hard too soon. Again, keep it positive! Good Luck!
