I hunt 40 acres of private land in the northeast which has surrounding ag fields in the area, not directly boarder the property I hunt but close to it. This year the farmer decided to turn some of those hay fields into corn. It'll be the first time since I've been hunting this piece (10+years) they'll be some corn in the immediate area. Any advice on what I should expect and how I should use this to my advantage, pre and post harvest? Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Those first couple days after the corn comes down are usually really good. I would have a couple stand sites on the edge of the field or along travel corridors. I might use a buck decoy as well.
I love hunting edges of cornfields. If they feel secure enough, they'll follow the edge of the cornfield and whatever may be bordering it (CRP, trees, etc.,.). If not, they'll likely travel in a couple rows which will make it tougher to see them until they are on top of you. Corners seem to be pretty good if you can get a stand hung for proper wind conditions.
Corn fields should be good for your hunting. Once they get any kind of a cob they like to eat the ends and keep eating for the rest of the season. They also will use the corn fields for bedding.
I hunt a dairy farm and the corn comes down a few days before hunting season starts. The deer eat the calm until it comes down then they hit the fields for any scraps left behind for about a week. That first week is usually pretty good. Find a runway dumping into the field and sit about 30-40 yards back off the field and you will enjoy the show. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It is a great thing to have around. The deer use ours for bedding, hiding, food, and you name it. It is a whole nother world for them. It is the only corn field within 2 miles. This year everyone around us went with beans. They come and go from our corn field all day long. There should be some pronounced trails leading to and from the corn at this time. Those should give you a good starting place as to where you should set up your attack.
