I picked up my first bow in a trade with a friend. He said that it needed to be re-strung and could probably use new cams. It has a 70# draw. I was wondering if there were any cams that would make it adjustable so I could work my way up to 70#?
adjustments are made by turning out the limb bolts. what's wrong with the cams that are on it? kinda bow is it?
Unfortunately for me, I haven't picked it up yet. I've held it and shot it once, but I can't remember the name. And as far as the cams, it was something that he said may need to be replaced, not that it has to be. Also, one other question: Which is a better arrow, carbon or aluminum?
both arrows are better. Nobody can answer that, just give you their opinions. aluminum is cheaper but will bend, carbon is more expensive but will not bend, aluminum can be straightened, carbon can be bought bent and cannot be straightened. aluminum is heavier ( could be a good point or bad point depending on your school) carbon is lighter, carbon doesn't always show damage which could cause you damage ( just gotta check'em). basically alumionum is repairable but less durable, carbon is not repairable but is more durable. depends on what you want, both will do what they are made to do.
Ok. Thank you. Is there any other advice/gear I should get? I'm just a little new at this and I want to start off on the right foot.
gear doesn't matter IMHO. It's like the saying goes: "It's the indian not the arrow". just make sure you get your bow operating as it should and become proficient with it. Nothing is worse than not being confident in your abilitiy to make the shot that you need to make at crunch time. practice judging yardage until it's second nature, know your arrows trajectory to reach different yardages. maybe your target is at 30 yards and there is a low lying brach at 15yards just above the line of sight to your targets kill zone. You'll be wishing you knew how high your arrow will be at 15 yards when trying to hit at 30, will you need to aim a little low so the arrow trajectory will pass under the branch? Just be ready for shots like that. the woods is very different from the range.
