Hey guys, I recently bought some new 100g carbon express F-1 broadheads. I've never used them before. So tonight I figured I would give them a shot. The problem is that I can watch them fish tail quite abit to the right then straighten out before hitting the target. What would be causing this? I'm shooting a Bowtech Assassin, 26" DL and 65#. My arrows are GT XT hunter 7595 at 28" (8.9gpi). Too little spline or should I shoot a heavier BH? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Looks like a little tuning is in your future. Your arrow spine should be plenty. I think you just need a slight rest adjustment. Check out the easton archery tuning guide and it'll get you all straightened out.
Have you done walkback tuning or broadhead tuning at all? If not, that's where you need to start. There are many methods to get to the same end result, but if you do a good session of walkback tuning and then broadhead tuning you will not only have your bow tuned much better, but will have more confidence when shooting.
I started walk back tuning last night and thats when I noticed the fishtailing arrows and stopped at 20yds. Thanks for the info guys. I was thinking today that they might not be fishtailing. The arrows I was shooting are new and the cock vain is neon green compared to my other arrows that are all orange vains. Could it be possible that I am mistaking fishtailing w/ the rotations of the neon green cock vain? I'm going to have to play around tonight and put my new BH on my old arrows and vice versa. I'll also have to swing by the bow shop to make sure the bow is tuned.
I'd bet you have fletching contact problems. Most walkback tuning STARTS at 20yds, and works back to 40-50yds. If you're getting fishtailing, you probably have a LITTLE bit with the FP's, but the BH's will exaggerate problems exponentially. Once you put BH's on the arrows, what was barely noticeable becomes quite apparent. As for having a bow shop tune your bow, YOU really need to be shooting it when tuning it, and if YOU shoot it when you tune it, you'll become more confident in your set-up. I'd start by zero'ing your TOP pin at 20-22yds, then do a walkback tune, shooting the same pin at 15 - 40 yds, at the same point near the top of your target, and see which way your arrow pattern trends... Trend to the left, move the rest a small increment to the right say like 1/16" and try again. Repeat until the pattern is in a vertical line, then move on to BH tuning.
I ended up figuring it out. I was a combination of things. First was the tuning. The local shop set it back to factory specs. Second was the BH. The F-15 I was using had some issues. One that had gone thru my target and into the wooden fence behind it had a nice chunk taken out of it. And another was missing a bleeder blade. In the end I switched back to Muzzy 3 blades. The F-15 were to damn expensive to mess around w/, and CE doesn't offer a practice version. After the ahop tune and new BH I did a walk back tune and then BH tune and I'm all set now. Thanks for the info.
