So Fellow Bow Hunters, I'm new to this sport, having the grand total of one season of bow hunting under my belt. A good friend gave me his old bow that was so old that he could not get parts for anymore. It had a draw length of 30" and I'm 29" but it was a bow and so I used the heck out of it. After a summer of shooting I was down to 6 inch groups at 60 yards and confident at 40 and below. So I killed three deer with that bow and had a great time. But my wife knew I wanted a new bow and she said when we cleared some debt I could pull the trigger on a new bow. I went shopping and tried everything I could shoot, it came down to Hoyt Defiance V Matthews Halon. Well Matthews won... Matthews Halon - 6 29"/70# draw IQ 3 Pin QAD Ultra rest Matthews 4 arrow quiver. I love it! However the change to the new (proper) draw length means everything has moved anchor point, grip etc so I'm sort of starting over so although I enjoyed shooting it my groups weren't impressive at first. However after 48 hours I have groups back to sub 2 inches at 20 yards. It is amazing what has developed when I go from shooting 15-20 year old technology to a 2016 bow, so quite, so fast and so smooth. I had to get new arrows with a stiffer spine and so the combination of efficient bow with 70# of force and 5 mm arrows means I now need a new target. I already had a IQ retina lock site (the $99 cheap one) which helped me a lot being new to bows and so I took the opportunity upgrade to get their new site. It has everything I wanted in a site, the IQ retina lock I love and adjustable pin with 2 fixed pins so it has the best of both worlds. 20 and 30 yard pins fixed for quick shots (you know you have been texting and a deer jumps out in your shooting lane!) and an adjustable pin for everything else outside that. Haha congrats! I love seeing and hearing people get so excited about this stuff. For a second there reading your post I, I felt like I just got a new bow!
I actually had me a new bow day today as well. I went last Friday and shot everything but a homemade stick and string. Narrowed down favorites and researched. Wasn't too concerned with cost this go around because I was tire of compensating. The bows that felt the best were a Bear Traxx, Hoyt Powermax and a Matthews No Cam. Waited until today and went back and just shot those three and came home with the No Cam. Not my first new bow, I bought a Diamond last April, but my first where I went to an actual pro shop and they set it up for me right.
