How ya'll doin. I'm just starting gettin in to bow huntin. I was just wonderin if yall can point me in the right direction. Like what are good starter compounds an what not. Thanks, Daniel.
Too many to name. I would get something that is going to be easily tuneable. Of course the best thing to do is go to a pro shop and shoot a few. I think the Bowtech Assassin is good for beginners because it comes with everything you need to get started shooting and comes fairly tuned from the factory. Good luck.
there are a lot of good starters, also a lot of ways of going about it. I bought a used bow and essentially forced myself to learn how to set it up. My friend bought a new bow and they did the set up. There are pros and cons to each. Some of it has to do with price and commitment. One reason I bought a used was because I never shot a bow before and didn't want to make a big investment. Some great bows, epecially for starters are the Bowtech Assasin (as mentioned) PSE Stinger and Brute Diamond Razor Edge Mission Craze Bear Mauler (and a few more) Welcome and beware, it's addicting...
bow i was in the same situation this year. i actually bought a PSE brute and must say that it is not that bad of a bow. it has a decent price tag on it and i have mine shootin real good at 50+ yards. its my first year bow hunting and i shot 3 deer with it and my first turkey. other brands i would suggest are hoyt and bowtech. PSE brute carbon express mayhem NAP bloodrunner Tru Fire release
There are many bows in different price ranges. If you're wanting a good mid-priced bow, look at the Hoyt Turbowhawk or the Hoyt Rampage. Hoyt has been one of the leaders in compounds for years. These are two of their mid-range bows that are quite nice and they don't have the high price of their top end bows. They still shoot great though. I bought an older used bow first and when I found out how much I loved it, I then found a slightly used (one month old) top end bow. One of the problems for a beginner buying a used bow is you have to know exactly what your draw length is and know about proper form. Some bows are great for one guy and they just don't work for another. You need to know that it will fit you before you buy it or you could be causing yourself a lot of problems in the future. If you find a used bow (Archery Talk classifieds are great for finding slightly used great bows), go to a pro shop and try and shoot that bow and see if it works before you buy. Good luck. PM me if I can help with anything.
I was in your shoes at this time last year, just getting started. I figured that every manufacturer makes some good starter bows and I knew I didn't have the time to travel all around testing each one. I wouldn't know the difference anyways. Ultimately, I chose between my two local dealers and made my decision based on the service I recieved and his proximity to my house. He sold Mathews products exclusively and I got a Mission bow, which is the Mathews econo-line. He helped me a lot and I got good with the bow I selected. Anyways, that was my approach. Good luck.
I just started also, i went to a shop and tried out a few. I found that i really liked the PSE stinger. Hope this helps
i used to have a pse stinger nice bow, but my cousin would always bring his mathews drenalin and shoot with me, made me jealous lol
I was going through the same thing last year also. I got an old Bear from a friend for free and by old, I mean it was produced in 1991. Yeah ancient may be the better term. Hey it was free and I am a full time 32 year old student that has since been laid off so I am glad I didn't spend a ton of money on one. I had my local shop set the draw length to fit me and I also tuned down the poundage. as I practice and it became easier to draw I turned up the poundage. After three months it was as high as it would go. I have since upgraded to a newer PSE Deer Hunter that has a big cam set up. Its still an older bow but it is way faster than the old Bear was. My next one will be a Hoyt Rampage XT. anyways, I worked on my basic fundamentals and now I am shooting 3" groups at 40yd and hitting the vitals on my bag target at 50yd 4 out of 5 shots consistently. I will not be happy until I am at 2" at 50yd. no matter what rout you decide to go, learn the basics and don't worry about distance until your form is perfect every time without having to think about what you are doing. Make sure no matter if you buy a used bow or a new bow that you have a pro shop set it up for you. When hunting don't take a shot outside of your effective yardage zone.
