Hey guys, I have been hunting with fire arms since 5 years now and after a disapointing season, I made up my mind and decided to get a bow for the next season, which will give me plenty of time to practice hopefully. I'm a big fan of the weekly shows on the BowHunting youtube channel and I'm posting here to get some good advices from experienced bow hunters regarding purchasing a bow. My budget is around 500$ for a complete set. I'm obvisouly looking at used gear at this price point which I'm OK with. Let me know what you think, what brands (friends recommended mathews, hoyt and bowtech), what models, any good website and good deals floating around, complete set vs. separate parts, etc... Thanks for your help ! Romain
Thanks for the quick reply and I appreciate the offer. I'm also looking for suggestions on what's out there now and basic information on where the market is. For example "you can't go wrong with x,y,z bows and prices are ranging from this to that". Ur price seems a bit high after a google search but again, I do know much about all this and that's why I'm posting here. Thanks !
I had around the same budget u do when I was looking for bows. What I did was research which bows were in my price range by looking online. Then I took that info to a few different shops and shot bows that were possibilities for me. (Even shot a good bit that were outta my price range for fun) Ur definitely gonna want to shoot bows to see which are most comfortable for u. This is what I ended up with. I found a good deal on eBay for my brand new 2012 Bear Legion. Went to a Bass Pro and shot it amongst other bows. Went to a local shop and shot a few. I ended up preferring the Legion even over some of the more expensive bows. I got a RTH package from a shop on eBay for $420 shipped to me. Bass Pro and D!cks both wanted $499 before tax. And my Legion RTH package from the shop on eBay even had better accessories on it than Bass pro and d!cks rth packages. So I got it for about $100 cheaper and with better accessories. Bottom line is u should def shoot the bows before u buy. But look around there are good deals on packages once u decide on a bow.
mission makes good preforming bows without a big price tag. check criagslist i put my bow on there and about a month it finaly sold. if you have your heart set on used you cant go wrong with mathews or bowtech. with parts like rest sight ext. you dont have to spend alot but dont buy cheep. there are alot of good products out there that are easy on the wallet to, but are alot better than junk. always shoot the bow before you buy it. good luck!
I have a Bowtech Assassin that I'd sell for $450. It is bowtech's ready to hunt package bow. I just bought the bow early November. Here is the link to bowtech.com if you want to check it out. Mine is the mossy oak finish. http://www.bowtecharchery.com/#/productBreakdown?r=products_products&i=16
I'm just suggesting this bow for you to go shoot as I was really impressed with everything about the bow. The accessories and all. I normally am not a fan of RTH packages at all but, this one has solid accessories that I really liked. It's the 2013 G5 Quest Torrent. Fully loaded for $499.99. It shoots and holds great!
I had decided to buy a new bow for this past year and ended up buying a Martin Bengal Pro. Its a nice bow with a lot of adjustment, shoots plenty fast (320's i think) and i got it bare for $450. I would recommend it, it has served me well for the money.
I have an add up for a great bow. Check it out. The bow now will have sight, quiver, arrow rest and arrows.
Hey guys, thanks for all the reply. Right now Im looking at a Mathews Drenalin, fully loaded that's around my price range. I'm concerned about the draw length. I'm pretty tall (6'6'') and I'm affraid I may need something that allows over 30" draw. This may limit my shopping window. Roughly, I'm measuring around 31" right now so this may not be the right bow for me. What do you think ?
I would think that 30 would be okay for you. I guess it depends how you like to shoot. My actual draw length is probably around 28.5 or 29 and I am shooting at least an inch and a half under that. I set mine up to shoot short because i don't want to be stretched out when i'm hunting with all my clothes on. I also like to come down on my shot when im shooting instead of bringing my head back. Hope this helps.
Hey guys, Just to close this discussion, I spent a lot of time on Monday discussing bow options in different shops, also tried a few of them and I ended getting a Bowtech Insanity CPXL. My draw length being 32", my options were limited and this one was the smoothest and felt really good. It was more than my initial budget but I think it will be worth it. Thanks for your help !
