This year is the first year I have had a compound. I got a Bowtech Convengence and it is set to 50# with a 30inch draw. I am going to the shop tonight to have them turn the draw up to 70#. They set it at 50 for me to get use to drawing it back and setting up since it was my first bow. After putting several hours into it, I think I am ready to turn it up. Now I have a question on arrows I should run. I purchased G5 Montec Fixed Blade heads in 125 grain. From what I read, a midweight arrow is between 420-500 grain roughly. So anything 300-375 grain for the shaft should be ok right? Or should I run a heavier arrow? I'm sure a lot of it is preference, but since I am new I don't have any preference yet lol. Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.
At 30 inches and you will have to measure DW but 70 is usually 67 or so you can run whatever style you want. If it were I , I would look into arrows around 10GPI. Sorry if you already know this but please know the number on the arrow is the spine not weight. Pick a brand and google that brand arrow chart to see what spine you need. Some love speed, some weight, it's up to you. I look for a sweet spot for your rig. Good luck and keep us in the loop during
I did not know that actually, thank you for informing me. That makes more sense now that I think about it as arrows get cut down to people's proper length.
Definitely make sure you get a properly spined arrow. At 70 lbs and a 30" draw length you're going to need around a 300 spine, 250 if you want to add extra weight to the front.
If I go up to say 65lbs with 30 DL would you keep the recommendation the same for 250-300 spine? I already ordered 125 grain broadheads to use.
I agree with Fix, depends a bit on the arrow. We know some of your specs, but for the sake of accuracy if you tell us all of the following we can give you an accurate spine recommendation: -brand AND model of arrow you want to use -Your bow's IBO rated speed (we already know this is 330 fps from you telling us what bow you have) -Your draw length (30" you already said) - draw poundage (groups are 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 normally, so just decide if you want 65 or 70 lbs of draw weight) -length you'll cut the arrow, carbon to carbon or throat of nock to carbon is fine -insert weight and head weight (you already said 125 heads, just need to know insert weight)
Man I hate being such a noob, looks like I've left tons of information out. I apologize. I guess what I am trying to figure out is what overall weight I should be trying to stay within. I plan on going with 65# and staying at a 30 DL. I don't know if we still need more information past that or not to determine overall weight. I have not picked out any arrows because I wasn't sure what I should be looking for as far as spine/weight. I can get the length of my current arrows when I get home from work, I am not sure what they are. The shop I bought the bow from set me up with them.
What you are going to want to do is first 1. Speed check your bow with a arrow and get us a weight off sample arrow and speed. 2. Decide if you want to throw weight or speed... Or sweet spot. Once we have those we can assist. Since we don't have those numbers all we can to is blindly lead you. But just in case that's what you want I'll help. I think you should (with what little I know of your rig) go a small diameter arrow. Arrows come in standard, small, and micro. Each size and brand has different GPI (grains per inch) for each model. I think Black Eagle is the $hit so get those. You can go on their website https://www.blackeaglearrows.com/ Pick which you like and then buy them wherever. I'll throw you a pm as well
