I have an old Bear bow from my youth. It says Red Bear by BEAR AMO 50" I don't know anything about bow hunting. I play a lot of Mount and Blade Warbands online and I am a smoking good shot in the game. Anyway do you think I need to upgrade my old bow? What kind of arrows should I get and what type of broadheads should I be looking for if I want to hunt dear or smaller game. I don't think I would go bigger than a dear with the bow. I am interested in learning everything about bow hunting.
I would find a local pro shop and go visit them. Put your hands on some of the bows that are out there and see what you like. they may buy/trade your bow, or set it up if you like it and want to keep it. You have alot of questions and there are some very skilled archers on this sight (not me) but I think you need some equipment in your hands to help fine tune your ques.
whats up Doc, welcome to the site. It's kinda slow in the summer so hang in there. You've come to the right place to learn.Read as many old posts as you can. It's a great place to start. I think your bow is under powered for your needs. I don't know what Mount and Blade Warbands is but I'm a decent fighter pilot in my living room, I don't think the skills transfer ; ) Take michaelp's advice go shoot some bows, read a lot, stick around and HAVE FUN. Good luck Jim
Warband is an online Medieval combat. You can take bows like the English longbow and Crossbow. 64 player online battles. The game is based in physics and pretty realistic. My old Bear bow is a small short bow. I am sorry to hear you think its to small for deer hunting. I am going to start reading the posts here and put together a better understanding. I want compact because weight is at a premium in a backpack.
Definantly go to your local proshop like stated before. They will get you going in the right direction, but I would definantly upgrade to a newer bow, you don't have to buy a brand new one, most of the time there are used bows for sale that you could try out if you want to save some money...They will also fill you in on some the latest technology with bow equipment, but you can do that right here without leaving your house. "good luck"
Yeah its red and made of fiberglass. I remember shooting across two baseball diamonds back in the day. I would take a picture of it but I have to charge the battery's for my camera.
Generally speaking, skills developed at Warband and other online medieval games transfer well into actual bowhunting. We see it all the time. You're a shoo-in.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPzSzkeCCbk here is Mount and Blade Warband in action. This is not me playing. I would switch to 720p if you want any detail at range. I am charging the batterys to get a pic of the bow I have. Needless to say its a old bow. I guess it may be worth 10.00. I may hit some garage sales and see what I and I can find.
I have seen archers on youtube.com shooting 90 yards with a compound bow and a string sight. I think that is the way to go. I like the led arrows also. This guy kicks some butt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq1ArqSfcJQ
I posted a link to a video of it in an another post. It is a new PC game so its not surprising you never heard of it before.
Thanks for a good laugh, Jeff. I needed that tonight. Don't judge us old folks too harshly Doc. Many of us come from a generation that prefers the exhilaration of the real thing to any simulation. I was considered a formidable CounterStrike opponent for many years. In that GAME I could mop the floor with someone and then turn around and kick their ass again for leaving a waxy yellow build-up but it didn't change the fact that in reality I'm a mediocre shot at best with a rifle. (I did earn my Expert Rifle Shot medal in the Navy, but I think I just got lucky.) Now they have "virtual reality" for the generation who seem to have chair cushions surgically attached to their butt cheeks. What the younger generation doesn't realize is that there was something better even before the first computer or reality show, and it's still around. It's "real reality", and it'll blow your mind. Instead of playing combat games, one could (and still can) join the Marines or the Army and truly enjoy the experience in a setting that makes Dolby Digital Surround Sound and high tech graphics seem like a joke. Or.... Instead of shooting at deer running across a video screen, you can buy a real weapon (ain't it great to live in America?), apply some effort and earn a shot at a real deer by scouting and figuring out where to hunt and how to get close enough to close the deal. Trust me - if you're serious about this and you get out there and kill your first deer, the feeling of accomplishment you will experience will be like nothing else you've felt before and at the end of the "game" there will be something real to show for your efforts.
I see people assuming because I play games I don't know anything about getting out. That is just ridiculous. I am already an expert fisherman. I have never went out bow hunting. There is a lot of GEAR out there now and it is a bit daunting. I guess it is much easier to assume something then to suggest a practical approach to building up a bow kit. I will just keep reading and looking up information. Still you have to admit that 90 yard shooting was cool.
amen to that I found an archery range but it is an hour from me. I am going to head over there some time soon.
It takes more than just your thumbs to shoot a bow. It's every part of your body working together. as for the upgrade, yes I think you would need a new setup. You should stop by a bow shop and talk to the dealer I'm sure he could set you up with a great virtual reality deal. Just kidding. If your looking for a new bow and have a lot of questions your local pro shop is your best bet, they know what they're doing or they wouldn't be in business.
I have been doing some research so I am not at a total loss going into the shop. I don't want to be the uninformed customer. I think bow string sights are a great thing. I am not sure about which ones preform better. If anyone has tips for me I am all eyes. I like gear that stands the test of time. I would give up on performance for durability.
