To me this design looks stronger than the old one. The tip being solid and with no slot machined in the feral to allow it to be week would have to be an improvement from the old design. Now if it had a tip like some of the NAP heads have with a really sharp point on it, that would be even better. With the Rage's feral being as long as it is, having a slot cut down the middle was a bad idea to begin with. I have had a couple coc's bend shooting at a foam target. I personally prefer a chisel tip or a tip like NAP uses on theirs.
You can guarantee they are going to be advertising "increased penetration with the new bone-crushing chisel tip". BS.
I'll disagree with that. As a matter of fact, I hit bone last night with a COC. The arrow got half way through and then got busted off. I resharpened the BH tonight and it shaves paper or hair again. That isn't the only COC I have used that hit bone and none have been damaged.
My guess Is that they were cheap heads too. When talking penetration most traditional bowhunters shoot cut on contact bh's Instead of chisel points because they penetrate better.
I agree, really cheap BH's. I shot a COC head through 3/4 pine board and the tip did not bend. I have shot plenty of COC's into foam and never had one bend.
Thread Hijack! I've seen magnus, snuffers, wensel woodsmans, g5 and zwickeys bend/curl. The g5 was destroyed, the others just needed to be hit with a file. (they should have been hit with a file first to get rid of the pin point) Sure, those aren't Kinetic heads... but they're not what I'd call 'cheap' either. Tanto tip is the way to go on two blades for sure. Kendall has some grizzly heads that are the affordable version of Ashby heads. They're some tough buggers for sure. I thought about using them but they weigh about 5lbs apiece. lol.
Yes, but did a foam target cause them to bend or curl ? You could always try the 125 grain Outback supremes, Christine.
Well, no. :D 'cept maybe for a couple of my zwickey heads. They had a super fine point that would curl if you just looked at 'em funny. Our Glendel foam buck did destroy a g5... but I think it was the metal bar in it. That poor head was shaped like an 'S'. We have another foam target that steals broadheads from wooden shafts if they're not glued in just perfect. hahahaha... Stupid target, I'm going to have to cut it all apart one of these days to get the heads out. K tested a muzzy on our ladder stand. (there was this squirrel, you see.....) We declared it a 'draw'. Both muzzy and stand suffered.
I've seen all sorts of things happen to heads over the years, regardless of design. There are too many variables when hurling a piece of aluminum at 300fps and hitting hide, bone, meet, then rocks, sticks, logs, dirt, etc. I've bent a Muzzy and a Rocky Mt. Snyper (the heads that Rage stole) on a 3D target. In both of those cases, it was the furrel bending, more severely on the Snyper. When I look at new heads, I look for strength in this area. You can buy new COC tips and blades, but once that body is bent, the head is toast. Heads like the rage, IMO, have too long of a body to be durable for repeated use. More length means easier to bend, especially made out of aluminum. At $40 per 3, they better last more than one deer with the exception of the blades. This is the reason why my current favorite head is the Slick Trick. Short STEEL body and heavy duty blades.
Generally speaking (yes there is always the exception) a fixed blade head and especially a cut on contact head will always penetrate better than an expandable especially an expandable the size of the rage cutting diameter. Now take away their cheap version of a COC and throw on a chisel tip and you will have less penetration than they already had. I will give Rage one thing though, their marketing department is top notch.
I shoot Rage Broadheads and the chisel tip does not do anything for me. I actually switched to the two blade 40 KE, that has a 1.5 inch cutting diameter, and have had great luck this year. For the first year ever, I have been able to re-use Rage Broadheads. However, Rage does not make it easy to change out the blades if one bends! Rage is a big cutting mechanical, and penetration will never match that of smaller fixed head. They have become the Bowtech of the broadhead world. Everyone wants to say they are expensive and never work. They both work fine. Shoot what works best for your set up, and your confidence. That being said, the chisel tip seems pretty well pointless as the opening of the big blades will still eliminate some penetration.
I've saw many Wensel Woodsmans curl on the tip, quite common actually. I don't use this head for that reason although one can fix that problem If your going to shoot the WW. As far as Snuffers that's something you don't hear of very often. I could see the newer lighter models doing It but the older heavier ones are like tanks.
