The Magellan 4040 units we bought five years ago are all shot now. Worked okay while they worked but since I am buying all new units for five cars (Christmas gifts) I am wondering if there are better choices. I had issues with the Magellan losing power frequently (even when plugged into the cig lighter) and it sucked offroad. A unit that provided GPS coords would be great for offroad romps (hunting). Just want a bulletproof unit that doesn't lose suction while I'm driving and also has a bluetooth connection for hands-free talking on the cell. I also like being able to locate things like gas stations, hotels, restaurants, ATMs, etc using the nav. Thanks.

This is the units i bought 5 yrs ago but they no longer even start up. The mounting hardware was weak too, easily broken cheap plastic crap.

That's just it. There isn't a unit that is really good for hunting. I'm running a laptop using Map Point, Topo USA, and Arc Serv, ect.... I recently started experimenting running a IPad. Although I like the form factor better it still has its limitations. If I were going to buy a true nav unit I would look at Garmin over Mag.

I wanted to add you can always choose to buy a hand held GPS and then buy a car mount for it. Most won't have a turn by turn voice navigation and the screen is small. I like the idea cause you can just grab the GPS and go when you hit the field. I would recommend Delorme Earthmate PN-60 series or Garmins GPSMAP series. I have the PN-40 and it has served me well!
