I just finished my schooling and have a 4 year business management degree. I am currently working for Pepsi as a route salesman. I dont work for corporate Pepsi as our plant is independently owned. When I went in I was led to believe that moving up would be very realistic but now I have been there for 7 months I have come to realize that this isnt true. My managers are all new to there positions for the most part and it doesnt appear that they will be leaving any time soon. Also I cant see myself selling pop for the rest of my life. The benefits straight up suck. I have worked there since July and my first paid off vacation is the first week of November 2013. A whole year with I get Christmas day, Thanksgiving day, and New years day off. I have been applying for several jobs at Vermeer Manufacturing and never hear back from them. My question is would you be comfortable leaving a job that pays decent for another entry level job that pays about the same. I know I have my degree but it seems like if I could get a few years of experience under my belt I could move up with Vermeer. They have great benefits and treat their employees good. I just dont know if I am just not being patient enough or if I should just try to jump in and get my foot in the door. My buddy could help me get in fairly easy as he and his manager are close. Give me some advice please!
I would stick it out if you see any hope. I finished up with my 4 year degree in business last year, and had to wait a few months before something became available. I had been working for the same company for 5 years as a welder while I attended school. Just give them some time and get involved in everything you think may benefit you in the future. You put in the hard work and your managers will notice you. Also, your management are also looking for advancement, so don't be so fixated on them being young. They will take promotions in the near future and open room for the up in coming.
I dont see much hope where I work. Its a small company. If i switched to the other place there would be many options for moving up. I have been told by several that you need to kiss alot of arse to move up at pepsi amd thats not how I work. I want to earn the job.
Unfortunately a degree like business management in most cases will not get you a job in that field immediately out of school. Companies simply do not hire people right out of school and put them in management positions without any experience. Where it will help you is down the road when you work your way through the ranks, it may even help you move through those ranks a little faster. That being said, you have the right mindset, don't waste too much time in a company where advancement is slow - find something where you know your hard work will eventually be rewarded.
Experience goes a long way. I got my job without a degree just by doing it for so long. Since I've gone to school and am nearly finished, but hard work and using your head will get you places. Now, by no means can I tell you that you should quit where you're at and go to vermeer because people shouldn't do things like that. That said, it seems you're leaving a few bits of information out: Are there any other options than vermeer? Are you looking for a sales position? Have you really done much investigation into who's looking to hire or is it vermeer or nothing?
Im not really looking into sales although i wouldnt mind doing that. Vermeer is the main company that is hiring all the time and it isnt very far from where I live. I know that I will have to work my way up into management. I feel like by switching i will have better luck advancing myself. I guess I am just frustrated that i will have to go a year and a half without vacation and then i was forced to pick my week with a day notice a few weeks ago.
My point behind the sales is that a lot of times you can work from home and be regional. Do you have a lot of friends that work there? What is their HONEST opinion? It sucks getting in a company that you're basically stuck at the bottom. That's a tough spot to be in.
Well, I would say yes if you think that you can move up. But 7 months at a job and no promotion really isnt that long to say that you won't advance. Also you should take into account if you want to be with a smaller business or with a larger one, each one has it's benefits. 4 year undergraduate in business administration also doesnt do much. Its your MBA and where you get your MBA that counts alot more. You should try joining the military where youre forced into leadership positions that will count for job experience. Or you can always go your route and try to move up. But hey, if theyre new you might have some waiting to do, but im sure if you stick it out and keep working hard you'll get noticed and move up. I doubt if youre a hard worker and you want to move up, that your job will keep you down there with a business administration degree. I usually go where the money goes, but theres more to life than money. I make tons of money right now, but at times, with the wrong bosses, you'll wish you could give some up to live a better life.
I know i havent been with this company long enough for a promotion. I just dony see a good chance of it happening for several years at minimum. My buddies that work for Vermeer love it. They are bugging me to try and get on lol.
Going back to the business management.. I think its just a basic degree that lets people know you are capable of learning and can handle some pressure as time goes on. I think if you stick with a set job for a little while, your degree will help you out in the long run.
Well soccerdan, looks like you just gotta decide for yourself. If your friends love it and you want to be with them, go for it. Flip a coin? Id go to where I think my career would progress best, make the most amount of money, and be happy with it. Maybe delivering soda for another year or two isnt so bad. When you get up in management you'll have alot of other stressors that'll make you wish you were delivering soda. If you want money immediately and you think that you will get it sooner and vermeer will be better, go for it. Did you try talking with your supervisors or bosses? It might be good to have a talk and tell them your intentions. And seriously, you can't say your job is bad when you get weekends and holidays off. Being in management I work 12+ hours a day and sometimes have to pull weekends. No overtime, but I do make more than the people who work for me. I also don't know how you plan on getting into vermeer if theyre not getting back to you.
It sounds like you've already decided and are looking for us to give our blessing. It's your life and your call, bud. Do what will make you happy. I've been running a small printing press for 11 years and 5 months. I know the job, and am left alone for most of my time, so I like it and couldn't care less about advancing up the ladder. I have pssed on one "promotion" already. Sometimes promotion is a word for way more work and aggrevation, without compensation. Just be happy with what you do.
remember that saying "The grass is always greener..." Seven months is not long enough to know whether or not you have upward mobility.
