-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking for some insight. I used to shoot a PSE Durango with Red Head carbon arrows, WB and 100 gr BH , killed lots of deer with it , but never paid much attention to the spine of an arrow or grains per inch. I haven't been hunting in 5 years and technology is playing games with my head. Next year will be my first year back. I now shoot a Switchback 70# 29.5dl, 28 inch CX Maxima 350 arrows 8.9 GPI, 125gr FP, WB rest (switching to NAP apache when I get home from Afghanistan). I have not hunted with this setup since I got it last year, but it's paper tuned and shoots bullet holes for me. Is there really any truth to this grains per inch and arrow spine stiffness as long as you shoot bullet holes and hit a 3 inch circle from 40 yds out? right now I just shoot what I have cause it came as a package and shoots well but, my normal way to choose would be to find the closest straightness tolerance of a brand of arrows, and then match up with the chart on the back of the box of arrows to make sure I was getting what the manufacturer deemed the best arrow for my DW/DL. Should I get straighter/lighter arrows like the Victory VForce V1 400 @ 8.1 GPI or 500 @ 7.2 GPI and drop my BH weight down to 100 gr, and then re-paper tune????? what would the advantages/disadvantages be as far as penetration, speed (IBO) and flight charactaristics???? Thanks
The lighter arrow is going to fly faster / shoot flatter, make the bow more loud, penetrate less and be less stable in flight (less forgiving, more susceptible to wind drift) than the heavier arrow. To clarify a few things: Papertuned is not tuned, it's just the beginning of being tuned. You'll likely still have some fine tuning to do to get your broadheads flying true. Speed (IBO): "IBO" is a set standard for 70 lbs of draw and a 350 grain arrow from a given bow. You couldn't have different arrow weights with an "IBO" speed. The rig you have sounds fine for hunting anything in N. America. It's nearly the exact rig my friend is out hunting brown bears with from my stand right now. Get it broadhead tuned and go kill stuff with it! Get home safely!!
i appreciate your input. sounds like i will stick with what i got now. what else is included in fine tuning? are you talking about matching the BH with the FP impact on a target? and how is that done? last time i hunted i used FP and got my bow to hit where i was aiming and then put BH's on and killed deer, now i am obsessing with making sure my bow shoots perfectly with BH and FP. saw the pics on your trailcam did you get that bruiser?
