It has been less than a year since I started bowhunting. I really enjoyed deer hunting and read lots about it and learned as much from other people as I could...and it ended up being a successful season for me. Now comes turkey hunting. I have been reading up on Turkey hunting now and it seems like there is some conflicting information as to where is the best place to aim when bow hunting. I would love any advice. What has been successful for you?
Turkeys are tough Melissa, and I still ask myself that question even after shooting 3 with the bow last year. My advice is to break them down. Unlike a deer where I want him broadside, I'd rather shoot a turkey straight on or straight away. Aim for his vitals and you may also hit the spine, which will drop him in his tracks. Otherwise you can't go wrong with the head or neck also. I know that may sound hard to do, but reality is there vitals are not much bigger than there head anyway. So it may be easier to pick a spot on his head & neck area than on his big body. Just my two cents, and like I said at the beginning, I still ask myself that same question you are asking. The only other thing I can say is be patient and don't rush the shot. Aim small and good luck this Spring! Share the pics!
I haven't shot one yet either but from what I have read, seen, and watched I would say the most consistent shots were the neck, chest, and thru the rear end Good luck teammate Sent from my LG-E739 using Tapatalk
The best place would be head/neck from all I've read and seen on the subject. However you have to be a good and confident shooter though. Personally I don't feel good enough or confident enough to attempt it myself. I shot one back in January at 35 yards broadside. I hit it about where the wing meets the body and it went straight through. The arrow passed through the vitals just behind the breast and caused no damage to the meat at all. The bird did a flip and skittered off about 12 yards and stopped moving in less than 30 seconds. It was probably luck, but it turned out to be a good and effective shot. The turkey broadheads offered now give more room for error on head/neck shots because of their width. At the time I took my shot, I just had a small broadhead on my arrow (1-1/8 cutting width).
If you are looking at shooting one in the head/neck area, I would definitely use a large broadhead made specifically for that. That head shot is tough even for the extremely skilled archer. Just me personally, I prefer to use the same broadhead as deer hunting (2 blade bloodrunner) and aim at the butt of the wing. This allows me a slightly larger killzone than the head and expands my range slightly. This aiming point does not move either, unlike the head which is constantly moving on a turkey. Either way you choose, good luck and have a great season.
i like to try for the base of the neck, or if facing away, as centered up the rear end as i can get. very small area to put an arrow in , but leathal if you can get it in there. good luck this season. you'll have a ball i'm sure!!!
