I know this is a little bit late but I bowhunt in MS. My uncle has about 120 ac of land and there is no road in it and I think it could be a great deer hole. Some of the ppl around have seen some good buck around there and so had my uncle. Want I want to do is make a few kill plots. I have read about some guys using them and had good luck with them. I want to know 1 should I use the "throw and grow" stuff or something else and 2 should I put it where five trails come together. There is a small open area where the tails come together I was thinking that would be a starting spot. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a good place to me. Can you till up the spot if you can I would plant a mixture of
Wheat, Oats and Rye Grass maybe throw in some purple top turnips that's what I am planing to plant in
my plots I'm around Columbus, MS you can buy the stuff at your local farm supply a lot cheaper
than you can buy the commercial food plot mixes which are mostly wheat anyway. :tu:

I would use 2 bags of wheat 1 bag each of oats and rye and maybe 1-2 pounds of turnips this would
plant 1-2 acres if you can lightly till it and plant just before a rain on top of the ground or drag it with
a bush behind your four wheeler just get the seed 1/2" under if a rain is not expected plant from
mid September in MS a 100lbs. of 13-13-13 per acre should be enough fert. :woot:

This open area you have, is it a bedding area? If it is I believe I would leave it be and hunt the outer edges of it. If you hunt it early mornings or late afternoon it should be a good spot. The few open areas I have like this on my property are grown up with high grass and are used as doe bedding areas. If you have another option of where you can plant I would plant else where. If deer are not bedding there I'd say use it. If you know of any other bedding areas in the area and with 120 acres, I would say there are, go for it. If you are not to sure of making your own mix, Evolved Harvest has a mix called Buck-N-Oats that is a mix of Oats and chicory that can be planted early spring and late summer. I am using it and mixing some of their Shot Plot in with it to have some forage rape and turnips mixed in with it. The Buck-N-Oats cost around $15.00 a bag and the Shot Plot is about the same. They both plant up to 22,000 square feet. As stated abouve, if you can get a tiller in there that would be ideal. I know a roto tiller makes it hard work but, it will pay off. Be careful with the fertilizer though. I burnt about 1/3 of my spring plot this year using a broadcast spreader. I didn't realize I had it opened to far at first. By the time I realized it, it was too late. Check the PH also. Make sure it matches what ever your seed recomends. If it doesn't it will still grow but not be as productive and probably wont reach its full potential. If it doesn't you may have to use lime to get it where it needs to be. I would plant as soon as possible.

I agree with the above about the fertilizer but when I farmed I used 300 lbs. of 13-13-13 an acre on my wheat pre-plant
disked in to 3-4 inches but that was to make seed for sale the 100 lb rate should be enough for grazing animals. If I were you I would put the fertilizer down before tilling and till it in as deep as 3" as for the lime it needed to be put down
3-4 months ago to balance the PH lime works slow you can lime it this year get benefits on next years crop though.:woot:

thanks for the help guy. I dont thing the open area is a bedding spot. Pretty much the whole 120 is thick thick.. I have made just a few walking trail on the land to get from stand to stand. I may just go safe and move the kill plot to another spot and watch the trail cams that I have in there to see if its bedding area. thanks again.
