My son has a Bear Outbreak bow and he can currently draw about 31 pounds. Is he pulling enough weight to be able to kill a deer at 15-20 yards?

Nebraska dropped all draw weight restrictions so I don't even have any regulations to use as a guide.

What's the draw length? If he shoots some cut in contact heads like Magnus stingers he should do well

Yes, no problem broadside and with a COC head, he will be fine.

He should be fine. As stated before, a good cut on contact head and limit his yardage and he will be fine.

I agree with everyone above. And if he shoots often, slowly work the weight up every couple weeks. But he should do fine out to 20 yards with a good cut on contact head, smaller the better probably.

Thanks for the advice. He will be happy to hear that he isn't limited to just turkeys. :)

I wouldn't shoot a turkey with under 40lb and 24" draw. Even then it has to be a perfect shot at close range. But for deer that setup is fine.

So my logic is backwards and turkey are harder to kill than deer? I'm new to both so this is good information to have.

I shot a turkey when I was 12 and I was only shooting 35 lbs at I think 24" draw. And I hardly got any penetration at all, lets just say it didn't end well. Never found him. Turkeys have tons a small bones and will really stop an arrow quickly, I shot one this spring with 62lbs and 27" draw and It didn't even go through the other side, even though he died 10 yards 5 seconds later. I would say at leased 40lbs and 24" draw with a small broadhead and close range for turkeys. As for deer he should be fine with 35lbs with a small broadhead at 10-20 yards. I would suggest Muzzy.

I appreciate the tip. This will be good news to him because he would rather be looking for deer anyway. :)
