I am returning to bow hunting after almost 20 years of not shooting a bow, and I had very little experience back then anyway! A friend has an old bow to sell me to ease back into it. The bow is a Jennings Quasar, it's old but was very lightly used. The deal is good, but the bow is set with a 30" draw length which is too long for me. My question. Can this bow be adjusted to say, a 28" draw length without great expense(new limbs, cams, etc...) or is a 2" adjustment too much? Thanks for any and all help.
You will have to find the specs on it to find out. Maybe your friend will know. If not take it to your local bow shop. When is the last time its had new string put on? are you putting new sights and rests on it? other stuff? this stuff adds up, you maybe better off getting a new bow ( $250-300$ )
Jennings was purchased by Bear Archery, you might be able to find more information out about your bow here: http://www.beararcheryproducts.com/registration If that doesn't get you what you need, you might look at calling their service department. I bought my first bow used and will admit that I made a mistake in doing it. It shot well enough, but I ended up spending as much or more on that bow as I would have a cheaper new starter bow with a RTH package on it. Depending on how old it is, you might have to deal with it being louder than some of the new bows (even while drawing it) and the fact that a lot of newer accessories won't fit on it. If something on the bow breaks, you might find that even getting the correct parts can become a challenge. The bow I bought was designed with feathers in mind, there was no way to shoot it without the vanes hitting the riser.
Honestly unless he is selling it to you for $50.00, I wouldn't buy it. Jennings are pretty old. Most will only adjust a few inches if they will adjust without changing cams. You probably won't be able to find those either. like Bigstick said, you may end up spending a ton on it and not getting it right. I did that with an old Bear. Newer accessories would fit but, didn't work well. If nothing else you may be able to find a decent used bow that is much newer or buy something new that is not too expensive. If nothing else you could sell it later and upgrade.
Oh and if it is as old as I am thinking it is, it should be 29", 30", 31" adjustment. Most of the old ones like that were 3" increments if they were adjustable at all.
