Missions Craze and Riot by Mathews are both very good bows. The Craze is 299.00 and the Riot is 399.00 I just bought a Riot and I love it. I can't wait for the season to start.

You really can't go wrong with Mission. Great bows and for the price you aren't gonna find much better. He needs to shoot it to figure out what he wants personally though.

I know its a hundred dollars more than you said but a Mission Venture is an outstanding bow for 400$. The extra 100$ gets you or him into a whole new level of quality and still maintain a budget. I just bought one myself. Another option is traditional archery, recurve or longbow. Just a thought, dont know if he is interested in that side of archery. Good luck with your birthday shopping!!!!

For what its worth im getting the PSE Stinger 3g. I looked at a bunch of bows in my price ranger and rally like the Stinger. And have yet to read a negative review on it.
