I don't suppose he caped it out? If he did I might be interested. Thanks

That sucks. Hopefully you can find one that will fit the bill.

I've kinda thought about this type of situation. I think for me, I'm going to vet out a local taxi in the area I'm hunting and trust them to do the complete mount. I would just feel more comfortable with a local that is used to working on those specific species handling the whole process.

Problem is the local screwed it up. Although he might have shown more respect if doing the entire mount. My taxidermist said he would do fleshing and turning of lips/ears all day if he could get $200 for it.

My taxidermist is very reasonable price wise though.

Yeah, I get where you are coming from. I know a lot of Taxi's don't do their own tanning so he may just freeze his capes and send them off to get tanned usually. Maybe fleshing them out isn't part of his normal process. I'm not making excuses for him because if he wasn't 100% confident in what he was doing he should have turned you down. I'm just saying that I would feel more comfortable having one person handle the process from start to finish. I fully plan to research the taxi's in the area when I finally get up the courage to make the trip out west and hope I have the luxury of relying on one to do a mount for me. I wish your experience would have been better because honestly a stud bull like that deserves to be displayed properly.

I understand your point completely. This guy does his own tanning as mine does also. Saw his work also. Looked reputable. My view us he saw an outsider and took some shortcuts for a quick $200.

Sad thing is I helped him hold a moose head while working on for a 14 year old that shot it doing the same thing.

Certainly possible. I can understand the situation you were in. Expecting the processor to be able to store you're cape in the freezer and not being able to. I would expect they would have the capacity to do that. I've only used a couple processors, but the one I use now will cape my deer for $20 and hold it and the antlers for a couple weeks. It just seems like common courtesy for the processor to do that.

Hired an outfitter to get it out and took to local locker. The meat was fine. We were over 8 miles in. Walked in and walked out first day. Put 18-20 miles on and legs were shot. Needed horses and mules to get everything out.

I agree on that being common courtesy. That is how any locker around here would handle it as far as I know. I guess that is why some people bring generators and freezers out. I would have been afraid of someone stealing while out of camp though.

The only thing I could have done differently was buy dry ice and put in cooler. Day temps were in 70's. I have a good cooler and that probably would have worked. I figured paying a taxidermist was the better route and I wouldn't have to worry about anyone stealing cape and antlers at camp while gone.

I've got a couple leads on some capes now from taxi.net that was suggested earlier.
