Alright, I'm nearing the end of my deck project I started last year, and we're on to finishing the roof we built over the deck. We're going with a wood grain/gray colored soffit for the underside of the ceiling, with traditional double vent white vinyl soffit under the eaves with regular traditional flashing. The question now becomes what to finish the end truss with. We originally were set on a cedar car siding, but I don't want to have to maintain this other than power washing or scrubbing every now and then. We're going to go with a vinyl, but we're not sure what colors to go with. I did two quick PS mock ups (yes, they suck) to show to color choices - white to match the rest of the house, and tan to match more of the natural wood color. I also mocked up the white flashing around the fascia to see what the colors would look like next to white aluminum. Between these two, what are your thoughts?
Definitely match the color and texture of the house siding as closely as possible. The deck looks great
Personally I don't think horizontal lap siding looks good in that situation. In the past we've used vertical cedar planks, in a board and batten style with a color that matches your deck.
Well I've only built a couple thousand house in 25 years so imo go to your supply store and get the vinyl stone our cedar shake siding. since your gable end I'd going to be following the cjs you really want to go with a vertical pattern not horizontal. From what i can see you will be less than a square of siding there and the fake vinyl would look good there Sent from my LG-E739 using Tapatalk 2
We had considered that. Wasn't sure how it would look. Certainly would match the barn. I wonder how rough cut would look?
Whichever way you go, I'd still match the porch and house to keep it from looking "added on." Obviously looking at the job so far, you're going to do great and its going to look awesome. And definitely, go burn down the barn... quick before she gets any more ideas.
If you want the look without spending the money, you could check out T1-11 siding, it basically looks like board and batten but comes in 4 x 8 sheets with plywood backer. It's kind of cheap looking but being that you are that high, it may look fine. Edit: The good thing about it is it's paintable in case you wanted to match the color to your house.
I have a ton of free rough cut 5/4 pine to use (my dad had a portable sawmill brought in last year to cut up a ton of pine and oak logs we took out), so that's not a problem. I would actually probably up for LP smartside if I had to, but I don't know. Is the general consensus that it should be white to match the house then? I'm terrible at these types of decisions.
I disagree, I think painting it white will make it look more odd. The rest of the deck is wood, so it'll look different anyway. To me, painting it to match would look like you "tried", but it still won't match. I say go for the batten strip. It'll be a nice compliment to the house like one of Hooker's accent walls If you go the matching route, I'd say square off the bottom and run the same siding...
I agree with Fitz. Near misses are obvious, like a car with obvious body work because the whole car wasn't repainted. It needs to either match or be a nice complimentary contrast. I too am thinking the whole house in vertical would look great... if it all matches.
Lol, there's no way I'm residing the whole house. I think (at least I hope) Fitz means to side in the batten style on front to constrast the rest of the house (which will REMAIN white vinyl):D
C'mon, it's either the house or the barn... take your pick. Either way, you'll probably miss bow season next fall.
T1-11 siding is crap. The over lapped edges alway buckle even if you glue them an staple them. You spent a pretty penny on the metal spindles so atleast do something worth the look on that gable. try putting that vinly siding I told you about on you renderings you willl be within you budget and very happy with the look. Or do horizontal sidind to match the house but then you need to square off the bottom of that gable too look like a soffit.
