Want to take him on his first real bow hunt this Weekend. Our state has no # requirements, just states broadhead must be 7/8 in diameter... anyways, his bow is at 30 # and his arrow is about 285 gr and he shoots 2 blade magnus stingers. his shot range is about 10-12 yds. max. is this set up lethal if he hits the boiler maker?
I'm just guessing that his bow at 30# shots with more power than what I started shooting when I was a kid. As I'm sure you know accuracy is the important factor.
man I think IBO is like 260 fps. his draw is probably 22-23" I can't recall but it was measured. It seems a bit too short for him. I will try and get him to the archery shop this week. I want him to be set up right before we go in the woods.. just checked, his IBO is 276 fps at 50# 28" dl.. he is not anywhere close to that...
I use 2 blade buzzcuts and i have squered entire hogs so i think a well placed broadside shot on a deer might do the trick. View attachment 79651 View attachment 79651
IBO 318 My draw is 27.5" 70# Velocity is 256fps Arrow is somewhere around 400grns. Ive also read alot on people using magnus two blade for recurves and getting solid pass throughs. So im confident he could at least hit the other side. But to be safe maybe you could get those arrow inserts to increase the arrow weight.
I think his accuracy is just as important as the specs. How accurate is he from 10yds with his adrenaline pumping?
his accuracy is decent. I mean he's not perfect but neither are any of us. I do not know how his accuracy will be at the moment of truth...that's what bow hunting is...nothing a slam dunk.. he can hit the vitals at 10 yds more times than not...
Just as a reference, the minimum poundage in Ohio is 40 pounds. Seems like he may be a little light especially if he does not get the sweet spot. You would think a clean pass through may be tough and a shoulder is surely a no go. Post how your weekend with your son goes!
I think if you can truly keep it to 10 yards you'll be okay maybe bump up to a 125gr head if you can for more FOC & overall weight
10 yds is what the ideal yardage for him is.. 125 gr is a big jump from where he is at 85 gr....you really think the 85 is too light/
His arrows are very long for his draw length...he has 21" draw and his arrows are 24-24.50 " long. the arrow probably weighs in at over 300 gr. would this be too heavy? would he benefit from a shorter arrow and decreasing the weight a little?
ok, I did some digging....I need some real world advice. his bow specs are 268-276 fps IBO @ 28" He is 21" DL pulling 30# arrows weigh 320 ish 85 gr 2 blade stinger Give it to me straight. Is this acceptable or not? He has been practicing and been doing pretty well at 10-12 yds. But if he doesn't have enough KE/MO then I will have to break his heart for now...
That should be plenty just stay away from the shoulder and he will be fine at that range. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I’ll play devils advocate. How will he feel if he shoulder shot a deer and never found it? 30# with a 320 grain arrow might not penetrate deep enough... Is it gonna change his perspective on whether he really wants to hunt in the future? I say wait a year until he can pull back a little more poundage. Maybe next year he will be accurate at 20 yards and pulling 40#. I’m sure it will be tough breaking it to him, but will it be harder on him if he just wounds a deer and never recovers it? Either way I think you will be ok. Good luck this season and let us know if he makes a harvest!!!
