Saw something strange Today I've never seen before. Took a buddy hunting today and he shot at a doe. As he shot the other doe lunged forward right into the shot so it hit the wrong doe in the neck, about 4inches below the head. Looked about center of the neck but at 20 yards I'm not positive. The arrow didn't pass through. It ran and we found some blood about 50 yards away (the luminock popped off so we thought we were walking to the arrow but no arrow). We then backed out and are going back at first light to look for it.

I've never seen this happen before so I'm not even sure if that's lethal. What are y'all's thoughts?

Unless he hit the jugular it's not a lethal hit. Bow or gun neck shots are low % rodeos. No idea if You have snow but if she goes beyond 100 yards she is still vertical now.

Yeah I thought it wouldn't be lethal. Not a big vital area there and a lot of meat but the fact it wast a pass through is odd to me. Guess we'll find out in the morning when we go look. Sad to see it happen, as it wasn't the intended shot but that's just life sometime. I'll let you know what we find.

You won't get a pass thru on dense neck meat regardless of bh or KE. Tuff break, it happens.

Yeah makes good sense. We'll be back out in the morning. Hoping it either dropped close by or it'll live to see another day.

Ended up out of luck hammering it in the artery. Found it dead at about 70 yards.

I shot a doe in the neck. It was also a double lung. Dropped in about 30 yards. Blood everywhere. Like a crime scene. Full pass through though. Gotta love those cut on contact

Glad you found her,...I shot a doe once that was scratching her ears (I guess) with her hind leg. I was waiting on her to turn her head, not knowing what she was doing. Made a complete pass thru double lung and hit her in the jaw. Dangest thing I ever seen, or heard, she ran about 50 yards into the woods and made the loudest hissing sound. Needless to say, she was easy to track, you had to walk to the side of the trail to keep from getting blood on you,...lol

What do you mean you shot a doe in the neck and it was also a double lung?

Kinda like this just a little lower and without antlers. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1387977857.459054.jpg
I guess it was slightly quartering to me but still pretty much broadside.

I've done this also... dub lung pass through + neck quartering away deer ran in a 10 yd circle and dropped blood spraying everywhere.

Imagine a deer quartering away with its head bent back cleaning its rear or something.

Have hit deer in the neck a couple times. Not a great target but there is a lot of artery to hit, especially on a doe's skinny neck. Glad you found her... hope it is the last one hit that way for you.

Awesome job backing out when you realized what happened... perfect decision.

My brother is a firm believer in the neck shot. Me, not so much. He has taken 3 with bow/crossbow with neck shots. Many more with a rifle. He has also lost 2 with neck shots. I personally wouldn't take one intentionally though.

I'm glad it turned out for the good for your buddy. It's crazy what they do when you shoot.

Wasn't there a BH or Die episode where a deer reached back almost like it was biting at the arrow and it blew through its snout and lungs?

A lot can go wrong on a neck shot with a bow. With a rifle... that is my first choice.

    Glad you found her!

My FIL told me once that I should shoot a deer in the neck.

So, a few years ago I made a mount for my phone to go on my bow. . I was doe hunting and seen a doe bedded down in some weeds. . I couldn't get her to stand up and I was walking towards her with my bow at full draw.

She raised her head up and I shot her in the neck at 36 yds. . . She jumped around in circles and the arrow was sticking out on both sides! . . I found the arrow later and all 3 blades was messed up, I guess I hit the neck bone.

Never did see much blood and never found the doe. . . I'll never take a neck shot again!

I once had a doe standing looking at me head on. . . I shot her in the center of the chest and she never made it 20 yds. . I might take that shot again only if I have to! :)
