You going after him while he still has his velvet or are you planning to wait for him to shed it? Sent from my Classic using Tapatalk
I'll be after him with velvet. I'm pretty sure I have his prime bedding area pinned down and I'll be out every evening for that first week or so. I've got 3 stands hung and I'll be playing the wind so I don't push him out of the woods
Ever evening is tough for me to accomplish but I plan on getting out at least two or three times during opening week. Then I will probably back off a little until later in the season. Don't want to tag out before the rut. Lol
That reminds me, is two the limit on archery tags that we can buy here in nebraska? I found in the regs that a person can buy up to two permits that include a buck tag but after that are we done? Can we then buy antlerless permits or are they for firearms only? Nebraska's permitting process is about as clear to me as mud.
It appears to me the regs state that you may purchase 2 buck tags and unlimited antlerless tags. That is for the year across all weapons.
You can buy two tags that allow you to harvest a buck...(whether it's a firearm and archery. Or two firearms. Or two archery.) If you're looking to shoot a doe then you should get an antlerless tag for your hunting zone. They are good for all seasons and you can keep buying them until they sell out. Which is normally around the time firearm season starts. Hope this helps
Today is the big day! Who is going out today? With the weather in the 90s, I don't have real high hopes but I'm going out anyway simply because it's the season opener. Since I'll probably be sweating, I think I'll stay clear of the best spots until it cools off a little.
On a side note, anybody in Nebraska, and north Kansas would do themselves a favor by making the drive to Fairbury to visit Blue River Archery. It is simply the best service I have ever received from a bow shop.
How's the hunting going boys? I was lucky enough to get the buck I wanted on this past Saturday morning! I'm a sucker for a non typical! I've posted a few trail cam pics of him on here throughout the summer. The hunt was epic! Spotted a rack in the cattails about 120 yards away. When I realized it was him, I gave a grunt and turned him to me. He slowed worked his way through towards me, then went out of sight for a couple minutes down the treeline. Later, I saw there was a scrape over there. But at the time, I thought he was goner. Then 2 minutes later, he came walking right down the treeline! I drew on him behind cover and when he walked in my peep he was quartered VERY hard towards me and spotted me in the tree immediately! I held it on him for what seemed like a minute and he decided things were okay! He continued on the trail, gave me a 15 yard broadside shot and the legend of "Special Ed" was all over! He's an 8x5 and I scored him at 147 3/8. Good luck to everyone out hunting! I hope your trip to the woods is as memorable as mine!
Two weeks ago on opening day, my son got a shot at a nice buck. He missed and shot underneath the big guy. He was still excited though. It was the first time that he ever got the chance to release an arrow. Better a clean miss than a bad hit. We might be going out again tonight. Maybe he will get a second chance.
Finally got on stand this morning. Normally don't hunt mornings this early but what the hell I'd give it a shot. Had a doe ome in looking nervous as hell. She took off and here comes a yote at 20 yrds.....schwack dead yote. Other than that pretty uneventful just nice to sit in nature for a few hrs. Looking forward to october!! How's everyone's hunting going? Seeing anything out there? I've only been out a couple times since I shot my buck. Things should be good this weekend with this cold front moving in tomorrow! I'll definitely be out for a good chilly morning hunt on Saturday!
I'm in the same boat, Dillon. I've been out 6 times, which isn't much for me, but I have only had 1 deer in bow range in those 6 hunts. While I think things are starting to recover it is going to be a few years on the properties that I hunt. Problem is I'm not getting any younger waiting.
I shot a buck last evening right at the end of shooting light. Didn't get a pass through, can't find any trace of blood or my arrow. I'm afraid I just fed the coyotes and buzzards. I am not impressed with the DRT single bevel broadheads.
