This year will be the first year i get the chance to kill a buck in full velvet. Aanyone out there ever shot one in full velvet?
I used to bowhunt an Indian reservation in Nebraska every year in late August. One evening hunt I watched a 150 class 10 point rub off all of his velvet on a dogwood bush at the edge of a hay field. It took him most of the evening and he ate the tatters off the bush. I will never forget it. So cool. I shot a couple of bucks there that were still bloody from shedding but never did get to shoot a full velvet buck. Then the Indians got way too greedy on the price of tags and started selling way too many to make it a quality hunt so I quit going. I hope you get a velvet trophy.
Growing up in Maryland the season always start on September 15 and most bucks shed there velvet but 1.5 year olds usually don't. My first and second buck ever shoot was a spike and a 4 pointer in full velvet, but never saved the racks. Wish I did now! Now bow season starts the first Friday in September, and gives me a much better chance to get a velvet buck. Most mature bucks in this area shed velvet by the 1st.
I am really excited to have the opportunity also! Im glad they changed it. Are you after whitetail or mule deer? - Skyler
