What?? Duke had 13 fouls and attempted 20 free throws. Wisconsin had 15 fouls and attempted 10 free throws. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wisconsin winning was a heavy bet in Vegas. Does Vegas have some power over officials and leagues? Probably not. Is it plausible? Sure.
But didn't call some in the second half on him that I would consider a foul. Just made it more interesting that way. Or it might have been Winslow I cant remember but same story.
I'm not a Duke Hater, not even close. I have always liked Coach K and always like the way he build the program into a power. So, I'm not coming at this from a Duke sucks and they get all the calls mentality. I reserve that for Kansas. But, there is absolutely no doubt that the officials changed the way they called the game in the second half. It was glaringly obvious to me as I was watching that Coach K had obviously had a discussion with the officials and all of the sudden they felt the need to make up for the discrepancy in the number of fouls. I agree that a more aggressive offensive team will draw more fouls, but they also get called for some charges here and there because of their aggressive nature. When Duke was plowing over defenders, they were either getting no calls or blocks. There's no way to play defense in that type of situation. Give Duke credit, they did what they had to do to win the game, and I believe part of that was to work the officials.
jesus you people Duke got more calls because they were clearly the more aggressive team in the 2nd half. Wisconsin was not aggressive...AT ALL. The 2 "questionable" charge non calls were not even close to being charges. I always assume the people that complain about calls all the time are the same people that call when they are fouled themselves during pick up games. Those guys sucks.
*****ing about the refs is loser talk. Nobody can say this game was given to Duke on a Silver platter. They had to hit a bunch of tough shots no question about it.
And LSU is getting two of the top recruits In the country next year for basketball, hmmmmm. Wisconsin got screwed Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Don't. No way on earth you can argue against the fact that the officiating changed in a very abrupt manner. I didn't give a crap who won that game. Iowa State was the only team I wanted to see do well in the tourney and they sucked. But, I did watch the entire final game and it was so obvious that the officiating took an extreme turn part way into the second half. It just did. Why.....we can only speculate, but it most certainly did.
National coach of the year feels the same way I do. I guess he doesn't understand the rules as well as you. WV MetroNews ? Huggins: Officiating inconsistency detracted from championship game
Coach K told the reporter at halftime that he wanted his guys to drive more and to try to get more fouls in the 2nd half. Seems to me like his guys executed that plan better in the 2nd half. Drawing fouls is not that hard when it is your goal. I would drive to lane all the time with the intention to get someone to foul me. Its part of basketball.
This might sound stupid and irrelevant, but when my wife used to coach high school basketball and had all her runs to the state tourney and championship games, her teams all went to the line way more than any other team. They passed and drove to the line. I remember two of her better guards getting to the line to shoot 8-10 free throws a game. They were programmed to be aggressive and executed that game plan. Getting a team on their heels and behind the gun foul wise wins games.
I don't get it... There were 2 obvious missed calls that went Duke's way that game. The step out of bounds play and the reviewed tip out of bounds play. By all means, complain about those. But remember that Duke fans could just as easily complain about all the blatant walks that Wisconsin got away with. And the blatant missed shot clock violation that helped get Wisconsin to the game to begin with... But you're right, its Duke that only gets the calls.
So, did they forget that game plan until after Wisconsin went on a scoring tear and several minutes of the second half had already passed? Because, I don't think so.
So did anyone on the Duke coaching staff or players do anything wrong or did they just play hard, aggressive basketball?
No more than UK in the Final Four (and I'm not claiming Kentucky got screwed) Bottom line, bad calls happened in both rounds. As fans, we see what we want to see. We see the blatant missed calls against us but the ones that work in our favor we tend to not remember as vividly. More athletic and aggressive teams make it to the foul line more often, that is logical and common knowledge. The fouls went all in the Badger's favor in the first half. Second half Duke regrouped and got way more aggressive getting them to the stripe more. I hate Duke and admit calls were missed, but they didn't determine the outcome of that game. Wisconsin mentally winning their championship on Saturday night and not showing up Monday is what won Duke the game.
