I really don't know which way to lean on this one. I think both sides can make a good argument.

For the athletes that are receiving money "on the side", I believe the value of a college education holds little weight. That is the argument I see the most for those opposed to student athletes getting paid. For the majority of college student athletes, it is a very valid argument. Every time I make a student loan payment, I regret quitting.

I'm not sure what the best action is here. No matter what they decide to do, this issue won't go away.

I like the idea. I think it will get rid of a lot of the BS investigations of athletes who take money or god forbid let someone buy their dinner.

    Why do you think that?

I don't really care either way on the subject. Student athletes are already paid (major sports anyway). Technically it is a cost of living stipend since sports prevents them from getting a job.

It wouldn't bother me if they allowed student athletes to make money on the side. It happens in the academic field, why not the athletic side of college?

Students are paid by the schools to do work study jobs.

What would be different in paying athletes for time spent practicing and playing in games representing the school?

I really couldn't care less either way.

you guys must have never been a college student. When I was in college I was on the golf and football team and we did get paid. ITS CALLED YOUR SCHOLARSHIP. how else do you think they get paid. Why give them more money so it can turn into the NFLof NBA. In college you get the guys and gals to play because they love the sport

I never understood this statement. It almost implies that there is some slew of super athletes in college out there, holding out from their god given talent in sports because there isn't enough money in it. Will they no longer love their sport that consumes their life if they are cut in on the billions of dollars that universities make off of them?

Like I said earlier, players are already paid and nicely at that.

I was given a full ride scholarship to college too. Difference was, I also got to utilize my talents to work in science labs and pharmacies for pay. I was allowed to go to dinners with possible future employers without paying. Athletes can't do any of this, all because they receive the same scholarship I did.

Agreed. Look at Kentucky, how many millions does the basketball team generate each year? Take John Wall, the university made millions off of him and that team, why should he not be compensated a little bit? And, lets be real, when guys like John Wall, Durant, etc. were in college they loved the game just as they love it now, being paid doesn't take away their love of the game!

Nor do they find any value in a college scholarship. You can tell them its worth $5 or a million dollars...makes no difference.

Exactly. Their dreams and professional goals revolve around getting to the NBA. College is merely a stepping stone on the way to that goal.

Like someone said above about them getting housing, meals, freebies, not to mention SCHOOL. I work a minimum wage job and got to school full time in order to pay for ALL of my own expenses as well as school. These kids already get more than what it appears they do. How about taking that money and investing it elsewhere into the colleges? Or better yet not hitting me with another fee for the year that causes more money to come out of my pocket.

Too many people think about the "average" student, or the "average student athlete". Thats not what this is about. This conversation is the result of a small percentage of student athletes that are responsible for making the university they attend, and others in that conference, millions and millions of dollars.

    +1

People forget, stand out scholars receive scholarships, extra work opportunities, grants, etc. that "the average student" doesn't receive but nobody is up in arms about that.
