Well its been a long six years of bowhunting that is for sure, but I always said I would never shoot a deer with the bow that I wouldnt shoot with the gun and held true to that. Its been full of ups and downs, plenty of shot opportunities, just not what I wanted, and the one that got away in Illinois in 2006. It all leads down to tonight, and I could not be any happier. I set up my climber on a scrape line behind my house about 3 weeks ago, and have hunted it twice if you count today. It was super super windy here today and I really didnt expect to see anything substantial, but you never know right. Already this year I have missed on with the gun, a nice 8, and hadnt really bow hunted. About 3 pm I decided I was goin to bowhunt tonight and see if maybe I could turn my luck around. Climb up and settle in around 4:00 pm, got some Special Golden stuff out, with the wind blowing into a bucks bedding area. Sat there, textin the girlfriend and others, passings time, holdin on for life in that stand. Look up about 20 mins before dark and have a doe upwind of me, and she ventures out and about in this field, and disappears. Offering me a shot once. I look back up and see a deer coming from across the field, I figured it was the doe but he turned and headed right towards me and I saw the horns. I drew back and he stopped thirty yards out, I setteled in and let it fly. Got a hit, but I wasnt sure how good of a hit it was, but watched him bolt towards the food plot about 400 yards away. Started the search about an hour later with the threat of Heavy rain. It was just little tiny dropes here and there, til my cousin arrived and found him right beside him in the ditch. Shot was definetly less than optimal, but with rain around it was go mode. I hit him in the top of the back going in the chest cavity, but it eventually did the job. I knew it was a really tall deer, but had no idea he was this nice til I found him. A beautiful 9 pt. that scored 122 both times we scored him. I could not be happier at all, and already took him to the taxi. Not too bad for an old NC deer haha
Thanks guys, I'm still pumped up. Haha PT I've been in lurking mode ol man haha......too busy tryin to lay somethin down in between my college classes
